'The 2017 Smuggler’s Boot Chardonnay has a crisp, waxy bouquet with hints of pressed white flowers. The palate is fresh and vibrant on the entry; citrus lemon, orange zest and a touch of lemongrass spice up the finish, although overall it feels taut and linear. This has good aging potential, although it will be difficult to resist in its youth. Drink 2020-2030.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (Nov 2019)

'Unlike all other wines, 2017 only part natural ferment. Rounded rich & flavourful, more stonefruit than citrus, but a fresh lemony acidity cuts the creamy texture. WO W Cape. Readier for drinking than the senior ranges.' – Platter's Guide, 4*

'Peach blossom, orange peel, struck flint and a hint of vanilla on the nose. A gorgeous mineral-led approach is followed by nectarine flesh, dried apricot and white peach underscored by a fresh, lively acidity, more linear frame and complexity from oatmeal, peat whisky and green apple skins. Fabulous length of flavour and depth of fruit intensity is further enhanced with a rich texture and spicy oak nuances.' – Richard Kershaw, Winemaker

Producer information South Africa’s only winemaking Master of Wine, Richard Kershaw, released the Smuggler’s Boot wines in 2014. The name for the range comes from the time of trade embargoes in South Africa, when grape growers and winemakers smuggled grapevine cuttings in their boots to get them into the country. The Smuggler’s Boot range is a selection of innovative wines which celebrate that ingenuity. Along with the Smuggler’s Boot wines, Richard Kershaw produces wines under the Clonal Selection range, Deconstructed range and GPS Series range. All are site specific, cool climate wines made in Elgin.
