Sijnn, White 750ml 2017South Africa, Malgas
A beautiful pioneering wine estate in the middle of nowhere at the end of a long, dusty, bumpy road at the Southern tip of Africa. When David and Rita Trafford visited the Malgas region for the first time in 2000, they were blown away with the incredible soils specifically in the Lemoentuin area and immediately set about finding a suitable property to purchase.
Most of the Sijnn vineyards are based on soils with a combination of these alluvial deposits on the Bokkeveld shale base – balancing intensity and structure with aromatic complexity and finesse. These very poor, complex soils encourage a deep root system, and low growth and low yield giving rise to intense, complex wines of great individual character.
2017 is a landmark year for their Sijnn White & their new label reflects this: The vineyards are now mature and it's their tenth vintage of White and they’re starting to understand their terroir. The most exceptional vintage yet at Malgas.
'More conventional than the Sijnn red, this is a three-way blend of Chenin Blanc, Viognier and Roussanne that sees a little skin contact before fermentation. Honeysuckle, fresh herb and citrus flavours reminded me of the Rhône Valley. 2019-24' – Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2018, 93/100
'Matured for 11 months in 400- and 700-litre barrels, 11% new. Citrus, stone fruit and quince, some waxy character and a little struck-match reduction on the nose. Rich and layered with punchy acidity (alcohol: 13.6%). Lovely proportions – weighty but not too much so. A dramatic wine.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100
'Bright gold straw colour. Lovely forthcoming nose of passion fruit, peach pith, lemon, nutty honey and a little salty fennel character. Vibrant, zesty palate with a multitude of flavours dancing across the palate. Piercing citrus, passionfruit and peach skin mingling with dusty spice components. Lovely natural acidity carries the wine through to a long, elegant finish. Drink now to 2027. Ideal on its own or with fish and seafood.' – Winemaker
The complex stony soils, together with a warm dry climate (350mm) moderated by constant sea breezes provides an ideal terroir to produce something exceptional. All vines are grown as bush vines due to the very low yield and vigour from our 12 and 7 year old vines. Mostly 2 high quality, low yielding clones of Chenin Blanc on drought resistant rootstocks – R99; Rug.140 and R110. Viognier and Roussanne included adding depth and complexity. Yield: 5 ton/ha (25 hℓ/ha) Chenin & 3 tons /ha (15hl/ha) Viognier & Roussanne.
Handpicked and sorted in the cool mornings. A portion whole bunch pressed and the balance 2 hrs cold soak before pressing in a traditional basket press. Barrel fermented in 400L and 700L French oak barrels, about 11% new for 10 months. Lightly fined with bentonite (natural clay) and bottled by hand unfiltered. Bottling date: 6/12/2017
