The Sijnn Red 2017 was named one of Tim Atkin MW's Wines of the Year in his 2020 report.
'Distinctive shiraz-driven flagship with mourvèdre, touriga & trincadeira (tinta amarela); the entire focus of the cellar. 2017, like 2016 (4.5 stars, 94 pts), elegantly powerful, with rich dark spice, chocolate & sweet fruit offset by lively acidity, firm tannins. 20% new oak, 18 months. Also 1.5 & 3L.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (96/100)

'One of the most beautiful and complex terroirs in South Africa supplies the grapes for this unique red, produced from a medley of Shiraz with 33% Mourvèdre, Touriga Nacional and the very rare (in South Africa) Tinta Amarella. Inky, savoury and wild, it has freshness and concentration, notes of rosemary and lavender, meaty depths and fine oak. Drink 2023-30.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

'67% Syrah, 14% Mourvèdre, 11% Touriga Nacional and 8% Trincadeira. Matured for 22 months – mostly 225-litre barrels in the first year and mostly 700-litre barrels in the second, around 20% new. Aromatics of black berries, olive and spice plus slight earthy, malty notes. Rich, broad and flavourful – seems to have entered a transitional phase with the tannins having started to mellow. There’s tangy acidity and the finish is nicely savoury, however, suggesting that this has a long life ahead of it.' – Christian Eedes,, 92/100

'A vibrant deeper red colour. On the nose it is savoury and wild, with red berries, lavender, thyme and rosemary. It is inky and wild but has a beautiful freshness, and concentration on the mid palate. It has a meaty character, entwined with rich dark spice and chocolate. It is elegantly powerful with a youthful freshness, yet a deep concentration, and a structured firm tannin profile, making sure this wine will last for many years. A beautiful lingering flavour remains on your palate, long after taking a sip. Best drinking 2023-2030 This wine will pair well with a richer red meat dish, red wine risotto or any matured cheese.' – Charla Haasbroek, Winemaker

Producer information David Trafford’s Sijnn project is based in Malgas along the Breede River. Forty kilometers away from any other vineyards, it's tremendously rocky soil and Breede River-influenced microclimate is unlike any other in South Africa. These unfiltered, unfined, real wines are made in tiny volumes and speak of Malgas’ amazing terroir.
