'2017 as usual blends 70% oaked (some new) semillon with old-oaked sauvignon. The former’s lanolin, lemon & beeswax dominate in youth, with light aromatics from sauvignon. Intense palate, with firm acidity & a light tannin bite, finishing with lemony brightness.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)
'Capall Bán is always released late and certainly benefits from some time in bottle. Based on Semillon, with 30% Sauvignon Blanc completing the blend, this naturally fermented cuvée is creamy, herbal and sappy, with zip and focus, notes of lemongrass and green herbs and a hint of oak. Drink 2020-23.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100
'The focus of this wine is based on a vineyard components arising from unique low yielding Table Mountain Sandstone soils. The Semillon leads with distinctive musky nose combining ginger, quinine, lime zest, cardamom in a minerally and flinty style. With barrel maturation on the lees, this provides a fuller mouth feel and adds to the complexity of the wine. The component of Sauvignon Blanc’s role is to provide substantial aromatic lift and introduce a nervous edge to the wine. This wine was vinified in a style that enhances the aging potential of a Bordeaux style white blend and should drink beautifully after about 3 years of bottle maturation.' – Winemaker

Producer information | The name Shannon pays homage to the owner’s ancestors who come from Irish descent. Located in the Elgin Valley within the Kogelberg Biosphere, Shannon Vineyards’ unique terroir speaks for itself. With the Peninsula Dam creating the eastern boundary of the farm, the vineyards experience a cooling blanket of mist which is such a great geographical influencer on the farm’s climate, that Shannon has included the river mist in their logo. As such, the winemaking follows a minimal intervention approach to allow the different terroirs to be expressed in the wines. |
