The super-premium Shannon Black comes from one specific clone planted in the 3-ha vineyard for the acclaimed Mount Bullet Merlot. This Elgin Merlot has made Tim Atkin MW's Wines of the Year in his last two SA Reports. 'This is the best young Elgin red I've ever tasted, a Merlot that stands comparison with the best in the world,' he wrote on the 2015, scoring it 98/100.
'This is only the fourth vintage of this top Merlot (2013, 2015 and 2016 were its predecessors), made from the Mo 348 clone, like the 2015, but unlike the 2017. It's a big, bold, serious wine with both eyes on the future. Ripe and chewy with firm tannins, stylish cedarwood top notes, dark berry fruit, plenty of acidity and time on its side. 2024-32.' – Tim Atkin MW, 2021 SA Report, 95/100

'Considerable emphasis is placed on capturing the clone expressions and therefore the parcel is vinified and matured separately. The wine has a fragrance of ripe red fruits such as plums and dark cherries, with earthy complexity and yet still expressing minerality. Maintaining a good acidity lends to outstanding freshness with a well integrated ripe and seductive tannin structure. Incorporating a minimal winemaking intervention approach, such as natural ferment and only two “punch downs” daily, retains silkiness and elegance.' – Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2016 vintage:
'Made with the Italian MO192 clone for the first time since 2013, Black all comes from the celebrated Mount Bullet vineyard and is a wonderful expression of the variety in a difficult vintage. Focused, intense and hauntingly perfumed, it's grassy and refreshing, with fine tannins, deftly handled 50% new wood and a long, tapering finish. Drink 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

'Merlot from single Italian clone - but variety less important & distinctive than the development of the excellent fruit with oak - its spiciness is inherent to the wine. Luxuriousness tempered by a silky, bright acidity & melting tannins, giving 2016 harmony & grace. Lighter feeling (14.1% alcohol) than Mt Bullet.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)

Producer information The name Shannon pays homage to the owner’s ancestors who come from Irish descent. Located in the Elgin Valley within the Kogelberg Biosphere, Shannon Vineyards’ unique terroir speaks for itself. With the Peninsula Dam creating the eastern boundary of the farm, the vineyards experience a cooling blanket of mist which is such a great geographical influencer on the farm’s climate, that Shannon has included the river mist in their logo. As such, the winemaking follows a minimal intervention approach to allow the different terroirs to be expressed in the wines.
