'A parcel planted in 1982 that faces south into the prevailing wind is the source of this graceful, ethereal Darling Cinsault with one of my favourite labels. Delicate, floral and enticing, it has rose petal and potpourri aromas, subtle spices from 50% whole bunches and succulent goji berry and wild strawberry flavours. 2024-29 – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2023, 96/100

‘Got plenty of cellar attention: ferment in foudre & open fermenters, 50% wholebunch, skin contact, 10 months in older foudre & barrels. Yet 2022’s fruit is there: red berries, lightly spice-dusted, white pepper, the svelte structure showcasing varietal typicity, with juicy freshness, amenable tannins. Cinsault taken to a higher level. 2021 (4.5 stars, 94 pts) the first all-cinsault from Darling.’ – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

‘92% Cinsault and 8% Syrah from Darling. 50% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured for 12 months in a combination of older 500-litre barrels, foudre and amphorae. Pretty aromatics of rose, fynbos, cranberry and a trace of orange while the palate is light and linear with snappy acidity and ultra-fine tannins. Elegant and precise as always. Alc: 13.1%.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

‘Predominantly Cinsault, with 8% Syrah, the 2022 Follow The Line bursts with a floral and fresh potpourri essence and a pop of bright, crunchy red fruit before hints of dried orange rind waft from the glass. Fresh, succulent and medium-bodied, the wine does have a firm tannic structure before ending with a tight mineral finish. Give it another year in the bottle and enjoy it with charcuterie or salami. Just over 10,000 bottles were filled from 50% whole-cluster grapes. 2024-2030’ – Anthony Mueller, Wine Advocate, 91/100

‘Follow the Line always displays aromatic purity, strawberries, cherries, rose petals and violets. The 2022 vintage showcases all of this with a little more texture and richness courtesy of the warmer vintage. The vines adapted incredibly to the challenges and have yielded an extremely complex wine with the characteristic freshness of granitic soils. Follow the Line drinks beautifully young but will age well up to 10 years.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Duncan Savage, a trailblazing winemaker, produces some of SA’s most sought-after wines. They are something of a contradiction; ‘savage’ in their essence of minimal intervention winemaking, but utterly sophisticated in their elegance, drinkability and poise. Every year his following grows, with some of these wines reaching a cult-like status. He sources grapes from across the Western Cape winelands and his cellars are based in Salt River.
