'Nom stands for nombulelo (gratitude in 'Xhosa') and Nomkhubulwane (a forgotten African goddess of agriculture). Situated at 700m altitude, the vineyard is a place where gratitude is instilled and tales appear.' – Jessica Saurwein, Winemaker

Tasting notes:
'If you want structure and focus in your Pinot Noir, Elandskloof is a very good place to start. Savoury, grippy and intense, this is a very smart red from Jessica Saurwein with spicy, herbal undertones, layers of red berry fruit and a fine, refreshing finish. Drink 2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100

‘Gratitude’ in Xhosa, from high-lying Elandskloof vines. 2019 understated, beautifully balanced, with vivacious fruit in a fine structure. Like Om, spontaneous ferment, 25% new oak, ‘head-to-toe’ vinification (using both press & free-run fractions). Intensity augurs well.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)

'The 2019 Pinot Noir Saurwein Nom, matured in 25% new oak for 10 months, has a superb bouquet of mixed red and black fruit, undergrowth, and an intriguing tree bark note in the background. The palate is well balanced with sappy red fruit and good grip. Red currant, cranberry and light tobacco notes emerge toward the finish. Drink 2022 - 2032.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 90/100 (Apr 2021)

'2019 was another dry vintage in the Cape, leading to tiny grapes and wines with a high grape to juice ratio. Grapes are hand-picked, hand-sorted, grapes are cold-soaked, fermentation is spontaneous, post-fermentation maceration is complete when the tannins are optimal, minimum of 10 months in 228L French oak barrels (new and older). On the nose: red and black cherry, rose hip, earthy savoury aromatics, cocoa, typical and unique orange rind character imparted by the vineyard site. On the palate: red and black cherry fruit, hibiscus, umami, roasted chestnuts, velvety tannins, balanced acidity.' – Jessica Saurwein, Winemaker

Grape origin:
Kaaimansgat Vineyard, Elandskloof Valley, Villiersdorp. The soil is shale origin with a significant portion of granite in the topsoil and clay throughout. This vineyard lies at 700 m above sea-level and is surrounded by tall mountains, making for a unique terroir ideal for the optimal ripening of this cultivar.
