Sadie Family, Palladius Magnum 1500ml 2018South Africa, Swartland
The Sadie Family Palladius, the sister wine to Columella, has probably changed the most since its release. It started off with Chenin Blanc and Viognier as the main components but now boasts more than 11 varieties from 17 different vineyards. This is South African winemaking at its best – a super-complex wine with many pieces to its puzzle that requires cerebral engagement. This is one of SA’s finest whites.
'Space prevents me from listing all of them, but this remarkable Swartland white is made from 11 different varieties, including Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Verdelho, Palomino, Marsanne and Roussanne, spread across 17 different sites. Peach, pear and lime flavours are beautifully melded on this more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts white, with gentle oak spice and a thread of acidity that runs through the wine like a cool underground stream. 2022-29. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 97/100
'Over the past 5 years Palladius has been the wine that gained most in quality and ref inement and much of this has to do with the addition of more vineyards and the improvement of their viticulture. There is always room for improvement but currently of all our wines the Palladius, with 17 vineyards, obviously represents the biggest canvas of the Swartland.
The 2018 wine is a seamless entity with a slightly higher acidity than in 2017 and 2016, but much more layered and the overall polarity in the wine has increased. Tasting this for the annual review and for our records, we were reminded that a great white wine surpasses all “classif ications” of wine. This one is seriously packed and dense at 13.5% alcohol with an acidity that beams at you. Hands off for a while!' – Eben Sadie
Tasting notes on the 2017 vintage:
'Even Eben Sadie can't always remember the 11 grapes that make up the blend of this white blend, dominated by Chenin Blanc, with Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne and Semillon Gris among the supporting cast. Amphorae and concrete egg-fermented, it's a wine that's less blowsy than in the past, with pear, peach and citrus flavours, subtle oak and aromatic spices. Drink 2020-26.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 96/100
