The Sadie Family Palladius, the sister wine to Columella, has probably changed the most since its release. It started off with Chenin Blanc and Viognier as the main components but now boasts more than 11 varieties from 17 different vineyards. This is one of SA’s finest whites.
'Palladius 2019 incorporates 11 varieties (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Clairette Blanche, Viognier, Verdelho, Roussanne, Marsanne, Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino and Colombard) grown across 17 vineyards (14 on Paardeberg, two in St Helena Bay and one on Piketberg). The nose is effusive with notes of citrus, peach, thatch, herbs and flowers while the palate shows striking fruit purity, bright acidity and a pithy finish. It appears somewhat lighter in body than previous vintages which is not to say underdone or insubstantial – there’s plenty of flavour intensity and a great energy about it and it should only gain in weight and texture with time in bottle. A wine that leaves you marvelling at the clarity of vision that has gone into its crafting.' – Christian Eedes,, 96/100

'Throughout the picking of this 2019 it was amazing how well the 17 pieces of the puzzle that make up this wine just perfectly fell into place - and so effortlessly. The vineyards ripened in perfect order and in perfect ratio to one another. The 2019 Palladius probably displays the most complex of aromas: not only is the wine very fresh, with a bright green edge apple fruit, but it then goes into stone fruit and exit with the tropical aromatics. The advantage is that across the spectrum we managed to capture a greater acidity than with the 2018, but with more volume and texture. The mouthfeel and equilibrium of this vintage is unmatched in any of our other whites. In many vintages the Mev. Kirsten poses the same depth and volume, but in this vintage Palladius surpasses all others. The composure of this wine is an absolutely singular aspect and it will benefit much from proper ageing.' – Eben Sadie, Winemaker

Tasting notes on the 2018 vintage:
'Space prevents me from listing all of them, but this remarkable Swartland white is made from 11 different varieties, including Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Verdelho, Palomino, Marsanne and Roussanne, spread across 17 different sites. Peach, pear and lime flavours are beautifully melded on this more-than-the-sum-of-its-parts white, with gentle oak spice and a thread of acidity that runs through the wine like a cool underground stream. 2022-29. – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 97/100

'The 2018 Palladius is a blend of 12 grape varieties, whole-cluster-pressed and matured in clay and concrete amphorae. Only Eben Sadie can take a gallimaufry of grape varieties and create a wine of this caliber. It has a clean, pure bouquet of wax resin, pine needles, greengage plum and light chamomile scents that gain intensity with aeration. The palate is bright and vivacious on the entry and displays a wonderful waxy texture; peach skin, hazelnut and saline notes appear toward the finish. It's all about the umami. Drink 2023-2040.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 94/100 (Apr 2021)

'Multi-grape blend, including chenin, reflecting its Swartland origin rather than any variety. 2018 opens with great aromatic vigour & energy; acidity also drives intense, textured layers to lengthy conclusion. Flavoursome rather than fruity, glimpses of honey, tropical tones to firmly dry finish. Will age well, like 2017 (5 stars, 98 pts).' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (94/100)
