100% Cabernet Sauvignon

The name of this wine pays tribute to the man who recognized the potential of Rustenberg, and bought the farm in 1941, reuniting the property, restoring its buildings and investing in its potential to make world class wines. The oldest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard on the estate is named the Peter Barlow block and consistently produces powerful, long-lived Cabernet Sauvignon that is given the best possible treatment in the cellar. Peter's family now continues his legacy. We recommend decanting this wine before serving.

The cold wet Winter of 2014 started early and ended late, which is ideal for the vineyards' dormancy; however an unseasonably cool Spring resulted in the vines going into Summer with 10 to 40% less crop than usual. The remainder of the season was warm and dry resulting in one of the earliest harvests on record. Zero disease pressure and small crops of fantastic ripe fruit combined with high natural acids make this potentially the vintage of the decade.

Tasting notes:
'The 2015 Peter Barlow Cabernet Sauvignon was matured for 24 months in 64% new oak. It has more finesse and complexity than the John X Merriman, featuring blackberry, briar and bilberry fruit mixed with mint and cedar. The palate is well balanced with a grippy entry, nicely judged acidity and a lightly spiced, mint- and clove-infused finish. Again, I would have liked more precision to show through on the finish, but it is clearly Rusternberg’s best offering this vintage.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 90/100

'Concentrated cassis, black cherries and some herbaceousness on the nose and palate.' – Wine Maker
