This wine is named after a former owner of Rustenberg, John Xavier Merriman, who bought the farm in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phylloxera crisis. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida’s Valley, the area close to the town of Stellenbosch in which Rustenberg is situated. The John X Merriman is Rustenberg's Estate wine, a blend of Bordeaux varietals that illustrate the ageability and true expression of Rustenberg's finest vineyards. They recommend decanting this wine before serving.

Tasting note:
'Marked by strength of vintage & cab’s lead in Bordeaux quintet, 2017 has aromatic depth, dark berries with cedar undertones, echoed in multi-layered flavours, gentle muscularity. All wrapped in dense, ripe tannin. Grand & ageworthy. Also in 375 ml & 1.5L, like 2016 (4.5 stars, 93 pts). Simonsberg-Stellenbosch WO, like Peter Barlow & Five Soldiers.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'There might still be some 2017 John X on shelves, and if there is make sure you bag yourself a case. Dominated by Cabernet Sauvignon with 50% Merlot, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, this is outrageously good value for a wine of this quality. Subtle, seamless and polished with structure, fruit weight and leafy top notes. 2022-27' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 94/100

'The nose has freshly crushed black pepper, blueberries, liquorice, dried herbs and blackberry jam. The palate is rich with big, chewy tannins that are well integrated, creating a big, powerful but smooth and elegant wine, with a long, lingering finish.' – International Wine & Spirit Competition, Silver (90/100)

'The John X Merriman is a powerful wine that rewards aging. In its youth the wine is worth decanting and expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits complemented with cigar tobacco and sour cherry notes. As the wine ages and its fine grained tannins soften a softer more savoury palate develops revealing wonderful drinkability and tertiary complexity.' – Winemaker

About Rustenberg:
Rustenberg, located in the Simonsberg Mountain valley, was founded in 1682. In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, as well as another farm which had originally been a part of Rustenberg. They joined the two properties and have now been running Rustenberg for over 70 years. Rustenberg is a leading producer of iconic, long-ageing wines. Stellenbosch is home to some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon terroir in the world but very few sites are more special than Rustenberg’s Peter Barlow single vineyard.
