This wine is named after a former owner of Rustenberg, John Xavier Merriman, who bought the farm in 1892 in sympathy with farmers suffering from the phylloxera crisis. He played a great role in revitalizing Rustenberg and in promoting the tourism and agricultural value of Ida’s Valley, the area close to the town of Stellenbosch in which Rustenberg is situated. The John X Merriman is Rustenberg's Estate wine, a blend of Bordeaux varietals that illustrate the ageability and true expression of Rustenberg's finest vineyards. They recommend decanting this wine before serving.

Tasting note:
'Crop levels were down 50% because of the fire damage on the Simonsberg in 2016, a year when Rustenberg made no Peter Barlow, but this is still an impressive Bordeaux blend with notes of mint, cassis and forest floor, a touch of green tea and a balanced, stylishly oaked finish. Drink 2020-25.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100

'Balanced, crafty red and black fruit combo with creamy vanilla from the oak, solid acidity and ripe tannins. Quite stylish, harmonious and easy to drink.' – Decanter World Wine Awards 2019, Silver (90/100)

'The John X Merriman is a powerful wine that rewards aging. In its youth the wine is worth decanting and expresses cassis, black currant and dark fruits complemented with cigar tobacco and sour cherry notes. As the wine ages and its fine grained tannins soften a softer more savoury palate develops revealing wonderful drinkability and tertiary complexity.' – Winemaker

About Rustenberg:
Rustenberg, located in the Simonsberg Mountain valley, was founded in 1682. In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, as well as another farm which had originally been a part of Rustenberg. They joined the two properties and have now been running Rustenberg for over 70 years. Rustenberg is a leading producer of iconic, long-ageing wines. Stellenbosch is home to some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon terroir in the world but very few sites are more special than Rustenberg’s Peter Barlow single vineyard.
