'Now bottled under screwcap (which might scare traditionalists a bit) this is a Merlot dominated Bordeaux blend with Cabernet Sauvignon and smaller amounts of Malbec, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. It’s a big wine, but the oak is well integrated, with fine tannins and blackcurrant leaf and graphite notes. 2019-23' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2017, 91/100
'The 2015 John X Merriman is a blend of 52% Merlot, 41% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Malbec and 1% each of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. In the glass, the wine offers aromas of sage, thyme, cedar, cassis, fire-roasted peppers, dusty cherry and blackberry jus with plum reduction. Medium to full-bodied, the palate displays flavors of dried tobacco, blackberry and pepper chutney with elements of baked earth, leather and dusty red flowers. The mid-palate shows remarkable balance between the alcohol and energetic acidity before the lifting tannins take the lead, finishing with a long-lingering and soft dusty grip. | Producer information | Rustenberg, located in the Simonsberg Mountain valley, was founded in 1682. In 1941, Peter and Pamela Barlow bought Rustenberg, as well as another farm which had originally been a part of Rustenberg. They joined the two properties and have now been running Rustenberg for over 70 years. Rustenberg is a leading producer of iconic, long-ageing wines. Stellenbosch is home to some of the finest Cabernet Sauvignon terroir in the world but very few sites are more special than Rustenberg’s Peter Barlow single vineyard. |
