Tasting notes on the 2017 vintage:
'Matured for 18 months in French oak, 20% new. Red and black fruit, flowers and herbs plus some pencil shavings on the nose. The palate has a weightless intensity about it – pure fruit, vibrant acidity and chewy tannins. Balanced, layered and long. Has the structure to age with benefit for many years.' – WineMag Prescient Cabernet Sauvignon Report 2019, 94/100

"You have to evolve," says Coenie Snyman, "but you also have to stay true to the history of the property." This is still ripe and intense, yet there's also more freshness and poise on show, with fine, granular tannins, appealing fragrance, subtle oak and classic cassis and cedarwood flavours. Drink2022-27.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100

About Rust en Vrede:
Rust en Vrede was established in 1694 but since 1977 has followed a ‘red wine only’ approach, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. This approach has allowed them to fine tune their vineyards while keeping things simple and focused. Coenie Snyman, winemaker at Rust en Vrede since 2007, has quietly tweaked the style of their wines and brought more freshness and elegance to these reds while, most importantly, retaining their power. Rust en Vrede has received many accolades over the years but cites their most memorable as having their wine chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner.
