'Charming blueberry and blackberry boiled sweets and attractive vanilla oak spice with a lovely freshness that carries this wine's finish.' - Decanter World Wine Awards, 94/100

'Deep ruby. Rich, with vanilla-laced wood smoke and dark chocolate. Plenty of ripe black fruit too, that leans more on the Cabernet than the Syrah. The palate carries surprising sour-damson freshness which doesn’t quite marry up with the fruit ripeness and the tannins are just a bit pinched. Not quite there yet, though I think it will come together nicely in time.' - Tim Jackson MW, jancisrobinson.com, 16.5+/20

'Powerful, plush, bold and full-bodied, this is a quintessential central Helderberg red made from Cabernet Sauvignon with 48% Syrah and Merlot and aged in 40% new wood. Smoky plum, fig and damson flavours are supported by compact tannins and enough acidity and minerality for balance.' - Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 92/100

Producer information Rust en Vrede was established in 1694 but since 1977 has followed a ‘red wine only’ approach, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. This approach has allowed them to fine tune their vineyards while keeping things simple and focused. Coenie Snyman, winemaker at Rust en Vrede since 2007, has quietly tweaked the style of their wines and brought more freshness and elegance to these reds while, most importantly, retaining their power. Rust en Vrede has received many accolades over the years but cites their most memorable as having their wine chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner.
