‘A suave red, with a graceful frame effortlessly supporting sinewy tannins, a spine of iron-laced mineral and an expressive range of finely meshed flavors. Offers notes of black cherry and plum reduction that are shaded with black olive, eucalyptus and wild herbs. The finish features citrus and spice accents that echo. Harmonious and enjoyable now, but has drive and energy that should provide a long life in the cellar. Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. Drink now through 2035.’ – Alison Napjus, Wine Spectator, 95/100

‘Pronounced red and black cherry on the nose. Flavours of cassis, cedar, cumin, and ground coriander combine with fine, ripe tannins that coat the palate. Defined cherry and blackberry notes lend a dark fruit backbone to balanced cedar spice, vanilla pudding, and liquorice that create a harmonious complexity on the palate. Well-structured and concentrated without being overbearing.’ – Winemaker

Producer information Rust en Vrede was established in 1694 but since 1977 has followed a ‘red wine only’ approach, focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot. This approach has allowed them to fine tune their vineyards while keeping things simple and focused. Coenie Snyman, winemaker at Rust en Vrede since 2007, has quietly tweaked the style of their wines and brought more freshness and elegance to these reds while, most importantly, retaining their power. Rust en Vrede has received many accolades over the years but cites their most memorable as having their wine chosen by President Nelson Mandela to be served at the Nobel Peace Prize dinner.
