These small-batch Chenins are on fire

Roodekrantz’s wines are probably the best Chenin Blancs you’ve never heard of. A project by Marius Burger Junior and Senior with winemaker Danie Morkel, we expect these small-batch Chenins to set the world alight!

At the core of Roodekrantz is their passion for old-vine Chenin and their dedication to viticulture and hands-off winemaking. In just a couple of vintages, they’ve produced enthralling wines that are right up there with the best in South Africa. 2021 is among the finest white wine vintages of the last decade, and these are not to be missed.

Roodekrantz

From a Swartland vineyard planted in decomposed granite, the Roodekrantz Rhenosterbosrug 2021 is lively with pithy notes and fantastic balance. If you love taut, energetic Chenins, Die Kliphuis 2021 has the wow-factor in spades – it’s narrow, linear and wonderfully subtle.

Brand se Berg Chenin 2021, from clay soils, is the first of two wines from Paarl and has a ‘driven savoury finish’, writes Christian Eedes. The 1974 Old Vine Chenin 2021 offers white flowers, fynbos edges and linen, with a layered, pistachio-laced palate. Just delicious.

From Stellenbosch comes the Donkermaan Chenin 2021 – one of the most complete Chenins we’ve tasted recently. And for hard-to-beat value, Roodekrantz’s 1983 Old Vine Chenin from the Swartland made the Winemag Top 10. It boasts 94 points for only R130!

2021 is a special vintage for white wines in SA. Of all the whites we’ve tasted this year, few come as highly recommended as these.
