‘The greatest white wine grape’ – Jancis Robinson

Wine Cellar is delighted to offer three electric Rieslings from three legends: the historic 13th generation estate, Trimbach; the biodynamic pioneer and Riesling whisperer Clemens Busch; and a cult producer with only four hectares under vine, Willi Schaefer.

Riesling is so versatile it’s almost unfair. Pair it with oysters, quiches, roast chicken, braaied corn on the cob – the options are endless. And, as we know, Rieslings last forever, so get stuck in.

The Trimbach Riesling 2021 offers lip-smacking juiciness. It captures the purity and mineral intensity of Alsace’s terroir and is the perfect companion to sushi nights. Blended for consistency from various plots, ‘Riesling lovers will rejoice at this taut and refreshing cuvée,’ says Vinous.

Next up is the Riesling Vom Roten Schiefer 2022 from Clemens Busch. The red slate in Pünderich is the rarest of their three soil types and showed particularly well in 2022. This wine hails from their Rothenpfad and Nonnengarten vineyards and is beautifully spicy, dense and delicate with a long, savoury, grapefruit finish.

Finally, we have the crystalline, off-dry Graacher Riesling Feinherb 2022 from Willi Schaefer at only 10.5% alcohol. It has ‘astonishing finesse and slatey intensity for a village wine’ (JamesSuckling.com) with lots of bright lemon and white peach notes. The textured, creamy palate is followed by a ‘super-long and graceful finish that takes your breath away’.
