Rall, White 750ml 2018South Africa, Western Cape
Rall Wines was established in 2008 and is owned and run by young independent winemaker Donovan Rall. He found his inspiration in that Swartland for the Mediterranean varietals and the dream of making these unique and natural styled wines under his own label from these scattered old vineyards was born.
Donovan Ralls’s dedication to his vineyards is evident in these new releases. 2018 was a difficult vintage, especially in the Swartland, so for this reason he spent time every day in the vineyards all the way through to harvest. Donovan says how this was the only way he could stay on top of picking time. Tasting through his latest releases, I was impressed with their reigned-in nature and sense of detail. The Rall Red 2017 and Rall White 2018 are his most defined and best yet. This signature white is one of SA’s most sought-after white blends and the 2018 is certainly his best effort to date. The multi-regional vineyard selection is key when mitigating the impact of the drought.
‘Complex opening to 2018 (fruit, flowers, spice...) & no less profoundly interesting palate, supple & silky, lively & intense. The core of sweet fruit moves to a long finish on a firm, balanced structure. 13.5% alcohol. Wholebunch ferment; old oak-aged. Exactly the same blend as 2017 (95 pts), chenin & verdelho (71/24) & a little viognier, mostly ex Swartland, some Helderberg.’ – Platter’s Guide 2020, 5* (97/100)
'As he did in 2017, Donovan Rall made his signature white wine without any Chardonnay, going for a 60/35/5 blend of Chenin Blanc, Verdelho and Viognier from the Swartland and Stellenbosch. Firmly established as one of the best blends in the Cape, it's still youthful and primary, but has stony reduction, fine lees and a medley of pear, citrus and stone fruit. 2021-26.' – Tim Atkin SA Special Report 2019, 95/100
'70% Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho and 4% Viognier. Matured in old oak barrels of various sizes for 11 months. Some struck match character before pear, peach, citrus and apple plus some leesy character. Rich and very flavourful on the palate with just the right amount of texture, a great line of acidity lending drive. Alcohol: 13%.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100
