‘11.5% alcohol. Bright, vibrant raspberry and redcurrant fruit aromas with a liqueur-like sweetness and some freshness. The palate is bright, vibrant and focused with a slight sternness under the sleek, fresh cherry and plum fruit. There’s a touch of greenness as well as some cedar, adding some savoury elements/ This is direct, with nice purity, and superb drinkability and balance.’ – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com,91/100

‘From Stellenbosch grapes although classified as W.O. Coastal to accommodate other regions in future vintages. Again, vinfication involving carbonic maceration to facilitate a soft extraction. The nose shows a top note of floral perfume before red and black cherry plus a subtle earthiness. Good fruit expression, bright acidity and tannins that are firm but not astringent. Not too underdone at 11.5% alcohol, this a thoroughly modern and very likeable take on the variety.’ – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100

‘Full bottle 1,160 g. Smart Stelvin Lux+ screwcap. Pinotage is a relative newcomer to Radford Dale (their first release of Frankenstein came in 2011). The grapes for this wine are predominantly sourced from a 24-year-old site in the northern part of Stellenbosch. The alluvial soils contain a high proportion of decomposing granite. Harvest was 10 days later than 2020, and a smaller crop. Hand-harvested and sorted. Spontaneous ferment led by carbonic maceration. This whole-berry ferment took place in open 600-litre wooden fermenters for a soft extraction. Once alcoholic fermentation had finished, a gentle press to small Burgundian barrels, an equal mix of 2nd, 3rd and 4th fill. Darkish cherry red but the colour is not saturated. Delicate and fragrant aroma of dark, wild (as oppoed to domesticated) fruits, especially blackberry and even a hint of something more red-fruited like cranberry. Light note of vanilla appears on the day after opening. Delicious balance of juicy fruit and dense but fine tannins. Refined, lively and long. What an achievement to get this much flavour and balance at just 11.5% alcohol. Way to go.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5
