‘From an untrellised Helderberg vineyard planted in 2017 – De Klerk puts the high quality of the grapes down to much improved planting material than was the case in the past. Red currant, cherry, spice and even a slight meatiness on the nose while the palate shows good fruit definition, snappy acidity and powdery tannins. ‘13.5% alcohol. Supple, fresh aromatics of strawberry and cherry with some herbal overtones. The palate is light, fresh and direct with bright cherry and plum fruit, as well as some stony mineral notes and a twist of fresh herbs. There’s real drinkability to this light, elegant expression of Grenache, but there’s also a bit of stuffing too. Juicy and supple, and with lots of drinkability. ‘Full bottle 1,158. Smart Stelvin Lux+ screwcap. Vegan friendly. Third release of this wine and the first under the Vinum label. A single, ocean-facing vineyard on the Helderberg. These bush vines grow on rocky koffieklip, with decomposed granite and a deep subsoil of clay. The site benefits from the maritime breeze. With plentiful rain in the winter of 2020, higher moisture in the soils led to strong and even budding in spring. A long, slow harvest. The grapes are harvested by hand at dawn to capture freshness. The bunches were hand-sorted, with the ferment a combination of whole-berry carbonic maceration and partial crushing in 7,000-litre open-top wooden fermenters. Light extraction. Basket-pressed and matured for 11 months in older French oak barrels. Lightish cherry red. Deep aroma of sweet-sour red and black fruit with a fine layer of stone-dust to add definition to the lively fruit. Savoury and almost sour on the palate, with more power and weight from the alcohol than in the Pinot and Gamay just tasted but a slightly gamey (more noticeable on the day after opening) and bitter finish. In comparison, there is some alcoholic heat here. Fine, chalky texture. Suggests potential once the vines are older. Producer information Alex Dale and Ben Radford are the founders of Radford Dale. Alex and his team produce only the most individual, terroir-focused wines under the Radford Dale range. They own some vineyards but also co-managing parcels of the best vines with growers in other regions. They follow a minimal intervention winemaking approach and their dedication to nature, geology and climate is beautifully expressed in their wines.
