‘11.5% alcohol. This is a very light, fresh, supple expression of Gamay, with cranberry and cherry notes, a slight leafiness and some real brightness. There’s lovely perfume and the fruit on the palate is deliciously crunchy – despite the low alcohol, this wine is ripe and it has a lot of drinkability. As with all these young Vinum reds, a decant is advised (they all taste great on day 2), and it can be served slightly chilled too.’ – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com,93/100

'Grapes from two vineyards in Polkadraai Hills. Carbonic maceration before maturation lasting nine months in old oak. The nose shows wild strawberry plus hints of herbs and spice while the palate is light yet flavourful with moderate acidity. Alcohol is a mere 11.5% – pleasant enough but lacking some directness.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 89/100

‘Full bottle 1,159 g. Smart Stelvin Lux+ screwcap. A new wine to Radford Dale. The fruit comes in part from the first plantings of Gamay in over 20 years and a site they have established on the Polkadraai hills. This site will also serve as the mother block for cuttings. There are fewer than 10 ha of Gamay currently planted in the Cape. According to Radford Dale's helpful tech sheet, 'The variety has a history in the Cape, and the potential was noted by C de Bosdari in the 1950s in his book Wines of the Cape. At the time, the Cape had not established a quality home for Pinot Noir. It served as a vital blending component to boot, bringing freshness to blends alongside Cabernet and Pinot Noir alike. It lost favour, but as with the top sites in northern Beaujolais, the variety of altitudes and granite-derived soils hold much potential here in the Cape.' The fruit for this Gamay comes from two vineyards, both south-east-facing and on the Polkadraai hills of coastal Stellenbosch. The young parcel of just 0.5 ha is the first harvest. The second parcel was planted in 1999. Harvested early morning and manually sorted, destemmed but not crushed, with the berries transferred to a 7,000-litre oak fermenter for carbonic maceration. A gentle, light extraction follows. After the whole-berry ferment is finished, the pomace was basket-pressed, with the wine transferred to 300-litre French oak barrels, none new. Maturation over 10 months. Lightish crimson. Delicate aroma of stony dark-red fruits, a definite mineral quality as well as the scented red fruits, mostly wild strawberry and cherry with a peppery edge. Almost dusty, but in a good way. Super-fine tannins and lively, fresh but not overly sweet fruit. This has real finesse and elegance if not great intensity, but then that's not its aim, as far as I am aware. Impressive persistence for a light-bodied wine – and so much character for a rather delicate, fleet-of-foot wine with such modest alcohol.’ – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5

‘The grapes were harvest early morning & manually sorted for the best bunches at the cellar. These are destemmed but not crushed, with the berries transferred to a 7000l oak fermenter for carbonic maceration. This technique lifts the fruit intensity whilst remaining fresh & spritely. A gentle, light extraction follows. After the whole berry ferment is finished, the pomace is was basket pressed, with the wine transferred to 300l French oak barrels, none new. Maturation over 10 months.’ – Radford Dale
