Radford Dale was founded in 1998 when Ben Radford and Alex Dale first made wines together. They believe in combining innovation with a healthy respect for tradition. In other words, thei approach is old plus new, and the best of both worlds.

They specialise in the mountainous viticultural sub-regions of the Helderberg area in Stellenbosch, Elgin, and the Perderberg area in the Swartland. This is a fancy way of saying that they work with grapes from all of these areas – the right grapes for the right wines (rather than growing all the fruit on their property).

The Cinsaut vines were planted in 1989 and are grown on sandy soils lining the banks of the Moddergat River. They are bush vines and keep fruit within the canopy, away from direct sunlight. There is no irrigation in this vineyard so it produces a small crop but one with lovely concentration and we harvested early during ripening to retain maximum freshness. In the cellar, semi-carbonic maceration methods were used during the natural fermentation, resulting in a wonderfully perfumed fruit expression.

Another esoteric varietal from around Stellenbosch, near us. More fresh than the Gamay, the Cinsaut has cranberry, crunchy dark cherry character and grippier tannins. This wine has attitude but delivers as much refreshment as the Thirst Gamay Noir.

This is a newly-released wine and has not been reviewed. See some notes on the 2015 vintage:
'From a 4 hectare vineyard owned by the Bredell family, planted in 1989. Whole bunch fermentation, with no sulfur dioxide added until bottling (40 mg/l). Vivid colour. Fresh, juicy and bright with lovely mineral, stony notes under the joyful, thirst-quenching fresh cherry and plum fruit. There’s a bit of grip here too. Just so fresh and tasty.' Jamie Goode, 91/100
