‘Perfumed aromas, bright & lifted, showcase red & darker fruit on particularly fine 2021. If 2020 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) had some leafiness, herbal edge here, in great vintage, subtler & perfect counterpoint to the berries. ‘Right up there with the New World's best examples of the variety, this is a limited release Cabernet Franc from a densely planted, 0.2-hectare block in the Polkadraai Hills. ‘15% whole-bunch fermentation. Matured in one new barrel for 12 months before a further six months in an older barrel. Dark berries and violets plus attractive oak-derived notes of vanilla, spice and pencil shavings. The palate is forceful in the best sense – excellent fruit concentration to go with firm but fine tannins, the finish super-dry but not astringent. ‘The 2021 Cabernet Franc Eden High Density Single Vineyard contains 20% whole bunches, basket pressed and aged in a new 500-liter French oak barrel for ten months, after which it is racked into a used barrel for another ten months. It has a very minerally, pencil box, almost Cab Sauvignon-like bouquet. Some coniferous/pine scents here. The palate is medium-bodied with gentle grip, fine tannins and expressive black fruit, tobacco and graphite with a spicy off-dry finish. Quite uncompromising in style, which I like, though personally, I prefer the Raats Family Cabernet Franc this year. Just 560 bottles made. 2025-2040’ – Neal Martin, Vinous, 92/100
‘The nose shows lively dark berry fruit and Morello cherries with hints of star anise and ground fennel seeds, from here a floral top note of violets further lifts the nose of the wine. The wine is exceptionally linear and precise, yet lithe and elegant. The complex dark berry fruit follows through from nose to finish with a minerality that reflects the 100% decomposed dolomite granite of the soil. The wine is characterized by its amazing concentration derived from the extremely low yielding single vineyard.’ – Winemaker

| Producer information | Bruwer Raats founded Raats Family Wines in 2000, and since then has narrowed his focus on Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, with only one blend, The Jasper Red blend. He believed that specialising would lead to success, and this belief was not unfounded, as today, Raats Family Wines is regarded as a leader of South African Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc.
