Piedmont’s Pio Cesare: Masters of the Classics
Piedmont's Pio Cesare
Masters of the Classics
Pio Cesare is one of Italy’s most important wineries, and their new 2018 Barolo and Barbaresco are 'absolutely gorgeous', says Antonio Galloni of Vinous. Established in 1881, with their cellars built into the 2000-year-old walls of the town of Alba, they are the ultimate classicists.
Fifth generation owner Federica Boffa said her grandmother loved wine but saved Barolo for Christmas. For the rest of the festive season and year, look to their Langhe Nebbiolo and Barbera – both incredible examples of the poise and pedigree their entry-level wines can offer.
The 2019 Langhe Nebbiolo is often made from the same highly regarded parcels as the estate's Barolos and Barbarescos and has 'lots of energy and a bright, tonic personality’, as per the Wine Advocate. Barbera is celebrated by the winemakers and people of Piedmont as their everyday lunch wine. It’s juicy and mineral with an amazing acidity – you can almost bite into it!
