'Extremely perfumed with dark berries, cherries, strawberries and crushed stones. Full-bodied with chewy, polished tannins that are muscular. Fantastic structure to this young Barolo, as well as great length. It grows on the palate with ease. Truly impressive. Incredible. Try after 2025.' – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 98/100

'The 2017 Barolo Ornato offers a bit more mid-palate density and volume than the Mosconi tasted alongside it. Like that wine, it is an infant that will need time to truly blossom. Sweet red cherry, sage, mint, rosewater and dried flowers lend striking intrigue throughout. The Ornato is a super-impressive wine that shows the more finessed style Pio Cesare has been pursuing over the last few years. Drink 2025-2037.' – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 96/100

'Rose, wild herb, forest floor and woodland berry aromas come to the forefront along with a warm spice accent. Structured and elegant, the full-bodied palate features raspberry compote, vanilla, star anise and crushed mint framed in tightly-knit, refined tannins. An espresso note lingers on the close. Drink 2022–2032.' – Kerin O’Keefe, Wine Enthusiast, 96/100

'With fruit from the village of Serralunga d'Alba, the Pio Cesare 2017 Barolo Ornato exhibits a richer textural style and more concentrated fruit flavors compared to all the other Nebbiolo-based wines in this portfolio. Dark cassis and blackberry segue to black licorice and tarry smoke. Those signature hints of rusty nail, earth and candied orange peel that are so specific to this village are also quite evident. The wine shows structure and depth that will help it withstand extra cellar aging. Drink 2024-2040.' – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 94/100

'From the southern end of Serralunga, one of the largest vineyards in Barolo, Ornato is characterised by various micro-climates so Pio Cesare blends different plots. The estate's first vintage of Ornato was 1985, and as with the one-off Commune di Serralunga bottling, this 2017 is bold and powerful with aromas of hedgerow fruits and some herbal lift. It has good intensity and is quite fleshy, with plenty of spice and black and red fruits leading to a long, bold finish. Perhaps not quite as immediately appealing as the Commune di Serralunga but more powerful, making this a great choice for the cellar. Drinking Window 2021 - 2040.' – James Button, Decanter, 93/100

'Though underlined by firm, dusty tannins, this red displays ripe cherry, plum, green tea and earth flavors. Fresh and full of energy on the lingering finish. Best from 2025 through 2045.' – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 93/100

'Transparent ruby. Haunting aroma – very intense and piercing. Sweet, rather gentle palate entry with some smoked liquorice. Still a long way to go and it would be absolutely necessary to eat with this! But the wine has some agreeable transparency. Well done!' – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 17.5/20

Producer information The historic family-owned Pio Cesare estate has been producing wine for 135 years, through 5 generations, in their ancient cellars in Alba. The cellars are built on the city’s 2,000-year-old ancient Roman walls. The family owns 70 hectares of vineyards, featuring high-quality hillside exposures, with parcels dotted around multiple communes of Barolo and Barbaresco. A visionary for quality, the late Pio Boffa transformed the company during his four decades as the head of the family business. Known to travel 200 days of the year, Pio was a global standard-bearer for Piedmont's wines. ‘I will carry on his legacy now with even more strength and energy and commitment,’ his daughter Federica Boffa promises.
