'‘Aromatic and expressive with lovely red cherry and raspberry fruit. Very expressive with nice tannins and these melt into the juicy red fruits, with a nice savouriness. Some tea notes and lovely cherry and plum fruit. Has freshness and poise.’ – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak.com, 94/100

‘Strawberries with hints of walnuts, asphalt and bark. Dried flowers, too. Full-bodied with fine, racy tannins and a very long, pretty finish. Refined tannins. Shows excellent length for the vintage. Beautiful now, but better in two or three years.’ – James Suckling, JamesSuckling.com, 94/100

‘Pio Cesare excels when it comes to the classics, and this wine is one of those. The 2018 Barbaresco (released one year later compared to its peers) delivers some mild candied raspberry ripeness with lilac, tarry smoke, cedarwood and spice. The mouthfeel is silky smooth with softly integrated tannins. 2023-2038’ – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 93/100

‘A rich, earthy style, this red evokes cherry, raspberry, iron and tobacco flavors. Broad tannins announce the finish, yet this remains balanced and lingers. Best from 2025 through 2040.’ – Bruce Sanderson, Wine Spectator, 92/100

‘The 2018 Barbaresco Pio is classy, elegant and wonderfully polished. Sweet spice, cedar, tobacco, leather and dried cherry all open effortlessly. This gracious, mid-weight Barbaresco has plenty to offer in an up-front, early drinking style. The silky, ethereal qualities of Nebbiolo are very much in evidence.’ – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 92/100

Producer information The historic family-owned Pio Cesare estate has been producing wine for 135 years, through 5 generations, in their ancient cellars in Alba. The cellars are built on the city’s 2,000-year-old ancient Roman walls. The family owns 70 hectares of vineyards, featuring high-quality hillside exposures, with parcels dotted around multiple communes of Barolo and Barbaresco. A visionary for quality, the late Pio Boffa transformed the company during his four decades as the head of the family business. Known to travel 200 days of the year, Pio was a global standard-bearer for Piedmont's wines. ‘I will carry on his legacy now with even more strength and energy and commitment,’ his daughter Federica Boffa promises.
