Pio Cesare, Barbaresco 750ml 2015Italy, Piedmont
'The Pio Cesare 2015 Barbaresco offers a mid-weight approach and a solid core of fruit. That dark fruit center is surrounded by supple but delicate tones of exotic spice, smoke, tar, licorice and crushed stone. This is a fragrant and elegant expression that drinks beautifully straight out of the gate. This is a classic Barbaresco with an easy and approachable personality.' – Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, 92+/100
'A dense and layered red with plums, dried orange and lemon peel and a long and flavorful finish. Beautiful. Such impressive layers and a fantastic finish. Very exciting. Love the length. Available in February 2019. Drink in 2020, but already beautiful.' – James Suckling, 95/100
From the family vineyards in Treiso (Il Bricco, San Stefanetto and Bongiovanni) and in San Rocco Seno d’Elvio (Rocche di Massalupo). This wine has always been traditionally produced by the Cesare family from grapes coming from different locations within the Barbaresco appellation. This is the classic 'formula' used by the ancient Barbaresco families to produce wines that embrace and combine each of the unique characteristics of the different vineyards and terroirs of the Barbaresco area.
Vinified in stainless steel tanks with skin contact for 25-30 days. Aged in oak 'botti' for about 30 months, with a small amount aged in French barriques.
About Pio Cesare:
Pio Cesare has been producing wine for 135 years and through 5 generations in its ancient cellars in the historical centre of Alba, Piedmont. The cellars are built on the city’s 2,000-year-old ancient Roman walls. The family owns 70 hectares of vineyards, featuring high-quality hillside exposures, with parcels dotted around multiple communes of Barolo and Barbaresco.
‘We prefer to have the same people throughout the entire vegetative cycle, from the pruning to the harvest, because they profoundly understand the needs and requirements of each of our vines. Our interventions in the vineyards are minimal and we can proudly certify that all our wines contain no residual chemicals. Our belief that it is always possible to produce a great wine even in the most challenging vintages. We will always find small quantities of high-quality grapes, which allow us to produce great, refined wines every year.’ – Pio Cesare family
