'This second wine represents 41% of the crop. Composed of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 42% Merlot, 4% Petit Verdot and 1% Cabernet Franc, the deep garnet-purple colored 2018 Reserve de la Comtesse springs from the glass with vibrant scents of ripe blackcurrants, black raspberries and baked plums, plus suggestions of pencil lead, cedar chest, ground cloves and lilacs. Medium-bodied, the palate is elegantly crafted with fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness nicely framing the delicate fruit, finishing earthy. Drink 2023-2040.' – Lisa Perrotti-Brown, Wine Advocate, 92/100 (Mar 2021)

'I like the Pauillac character, safe and eucalyptus-lined with a ton of black chocolate, cassis, and a brush of slate. Really a wine that you feel stands on its own. Drinking Window 2023 - 2038.' – Jane Anson, Decanter, 92/100 (Nov 2020)

'My feeling about the 2018 Réserve de la Comtesse is pretty much the same as it was when I first tasted it en primeur. It is an attractive, gracious wine with plenty of immediacy and appeal, but not the depth of some previous editions. I imagine that mostly reflects the significant presence of young vine fruit here and the uneven quality of the growing season and vintage. I would prefer to drink the 2018 over the next decade or so. Drink 2021-2030.' – Antonio Galloni, Vinous, 91/100 (Mar 2021)

'The 2018 Réserve de Pichon Comtesse has undergone a discreet change of name since the 2017 vintage. What has not changed is that it’s a knockout Second Label. It ladles out gorgeous scents of blackberry mixed with iodine and violets, just as it did from barrel. The palate is quite rich and generous, with saturated, pliant tannins, a very fine line of acidity and hints of graphite furnishing the finish. Give it, say, three years in bottle and you will have a delicious wine on your hands. Drink 2023-2036.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 91/100 (Mar 2021)

'Bright and juicy, with a mix of red and black currant preserve flavors lined with notes of briar and licorice root, ending with a hint of tobacco. Not large in scale, but has good latent energy. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2028.' – James Molesworth, Wine Spectator, 90/100

'Very dark cherry fruit. Sweeter and riper on the nose than the Pez just tasted, pure, dark and spicy. Much riper than usual. Pencil shavings scent on the palate, lithe and fine tannins, really smooth and gentle, just enough freshness to balance. A gentle touch. Creamy. They have kept lovely harmony.' – Julia Harding MW, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20 (Apr 2019)

Producer information Formerly known as Réserve de la Comtesse, Pichon Comtesse Réserve is the second wine of Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande. Château Pichon Longueville Comtesse de Lalande is a 75-hectare property in the east of the Pauillac appellation of Bordeaux. It is one of the most prominent Super Seconds in Bordeaux. Thanks to the energy and ambitious drive of May-Eliane de Lenquesaing, who took over the property in 1978, the estate has made tremendous strides in the last 20 years. The estate vineyards are planted with 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Franc and 8% Petit Verdot. The vines are grown in deep gravel soils with clay, sandstone and limestone layers. The wine is fermented in stainless steel before being matured in oak barriques (50% new) for 18 months.
