Paulus Wine Co., Bosberaad Chenin Blanc 750ml 2019South Africa, Swartland
'Paulus Wine Co. is an undertaking by Paul Jordaan, winemaker at Sadie Family Wines, and his French partner Pauline Roux, Bosberaad 2019 the second vintage of a Chenin Blanc from old-vine Paardeberg grapes. It currently presents as very subtle. Pear, citrus and white peach along with hints of hay and dried herbs on the nose before a palate that is clean and fresh with a lightly savoury finish. There is a sense of more to come with time in bottle.' – Christian Eedes, WineMag.co.za, 92/100
'On the nose, we pick up a variety of stone fruits like pear and apricot accompanied by some hints of lemon zest, quince, orange blossoms and honeycomb. There is a certain flintiness/saltiness to the wine which runs from the nose straight through to the pallet and just pulls everything nicely together. The slightest hint of reduction almost emphasises and elevates that freshness.' – Winemaker
Alc: 13.5% | RS: 2.7 g/L | TA: 5.5 g/L | PH: 3.24
Tasting notes on the 2018 vintage:
'Made by Paul Jordaan, Eben Sadie's assistant winemaker, using fruit from the Kweperfontein vineyard on the Paardeberg, this is an exciting first release from a very talented young oenologist. The coolness of a shaded site is reflected in the freshness and bite of the wine, adding focus to a palate that's bready, spicy and rich. Drink 2020-24.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 93/100
'Chenin off mature Paardeberg bushvines, the granitic soils giving brightly aromatic, flint-inflected fruit. 2018 depth & intensity of flavour, good mouthfeel, some breadth from 10 months on lees in old oak, decent acidic grip. Altogether well balanced.' – Platter's Guide, 4.5* (93/100)
