Paul Wallace Black Dog Malbec 2019 Bottle size: 750ml
South Africa, Elgin
R260
This vintage has not been rated yet, see 2017 tasting notes:
'Whereas most local versions of this variety are full and rich to a fault, the soon-to-be-released Black Dog 2017 is a light and rather pretty wine (alcohol: 13.14%). The nose displays violets to go with black fruit while the palate is marked by pure fruit, fresh acidity and ever so fine tannins. Made by Johan Jordaan at Spier, the final wine includes 5% Petit Verdot and was matured for 15 months in mainly French oak but also a small portion in concrete egg.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 92/100

Producer information | Paul Wallace, a viticultural consultant with over 30 years experience, purchased an Elgin farm with his wife Nicky in 2003. With a strong belief in the potential of the cool-climate Elgin region, they replaced the orchards with vineyards, creating 12 new hectares of vines. They have been producing the Black Dog Malbec since 2004 and from 2013 have expanded their wine range. This is a family affair with sons, Mark and Bobby, involved in the farm and also starting their own wine project together. |
