'Back on form after a slight dip in 2019, this comes from a low-yielding vineyard at 600 metres in Montagu. Rich, intense, stony and bone dry, it's a wine that has incredible concentration, salinity and skin tannins, with undertones of fresh dough and aniseed and laser-like focus. 2022-28.' – Tim Atkin MW, 2021 SA Report, 95/100

'For whatever reason, the 2020 vintage of Patatsfontein Steen from a vineyard in Montagu as made by Reenen Borman doesn’t seem to have quite the same clarity and brightness of most previous vintages. The nose is shy, subtle notes of peach, cut apple and earthiness revealing themselves with time in the glass while the palate is broad with moderate acidity and a powdery, flour-like texture. It’s by no means a poor wine but it doesn’t have nearly the focus of the excellent 2019, for instance.' – Christian Eedes,, 93/100

'Pistachio and yellow fruit aromatics. Intensely flavoured. Long textured finish.' – Reenen Borman, Winemaker

Producer information Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
