Blend: 74% Colombar and 26% Chenin Blanc

Tasting notes:
'The blend this year has 75% Colombard (up from 52% last year). The immediate reductive note blows off and is followed by lifted stone fruit, a fresh crispness and balanced by broad-brushed flavours on the palate. One immediately notices the lovely mouthfeel of this wine – whilst crisp and fresh, it has good fruit density and is a super partner for food with a saline, powered finish. Mostly from 30+-year-old vineyards and raised in older, almost neutral oak.' – James Pietersen (March 2020)

'Vibrant mineral and stone fruit aromatics. Focused and fresh. Long textured finish.' – Winemaker

Alc: 13% | RS: 1.4 g/L | TA: 6.0 g/L | PH: 3.16

Tasting notes on the 2018 vintage:
'Always a marriage of Colombard and Chenin Blanc, although there was slightly more of the former in 2017 than in this vintage, this comes from the slate soils of isolated Montagu. Dusty and aromatic, with fynbos perfume, good concentration and well-judged acidity. Drink 2019-23.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2019, 92/100

'It makes for a more substantial wine that’s full of personality. The nose shows a floral top note before pear, peach, apple and citrus with a hint of reduction in the background while the palate has good weight and texture, the acidity is nicely coated and the finish gently savoury. Price: R175 a bottle.' – Christian Eedes,, 91/100

About Patatsfontein:
Patatsfontein is a winemaking venture formed by Reenen Borman of Boschkloof, fund manager Henk Kotze and Fritz Schoon – ‘Master’ baker of Schoon De Companje in Stellenbosch. Reenen's accomplished hand and ever-increasing skills are especially impressive considering his young age. He's possibly our finest new-generation winemaker at present and his latest releases are just epic! Their 2014 Steen was Tim Atkin's White Wine Discovery of the Year and changed the status quo of what can be achieved in a region essentially known for sweet Muscadel.
