‘Cape Bordeaux, cab-led in 2019, with merlot, cab franc. Use of barriques, 18 months, 60% new, gives cocoa-rich chocolate layers to the dark fruit. Complex, lots going on, including a firm dry tannin foundation, gearing it for a rewarding future. These always serious, for the cellar collection. 2017 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) saw merlot lead the blend. | Producer information | Abraham was the first van Velden to make wine at Overgaauw when he founded the farm in 1905 and built his wine cellar four years later. The Van Veldens are true Cape winemaking pioneers. David’s father, Braam, was a founding member of the Cape Winemakers Guild in 1984 and they were one of the first estates to produce a Bordeaux blend, make Merlot in SA and use 225ℓ Bordeaux barrels for élevage. |
