'Toro wines unlike any other' – Decanter

Bodega Numanthia has been a driving force in Toro’s rise over the past two decades. Founded in 1998 by the Eguren brothers, when this Spanish region had only eight wineries, they delivered Toro’s first 100-point wine in 2004. Today Numanthia continues to farm parcels of ungrafted bush vines, including pre-phylloxera sites, that reflect the rugged terrain and local Tempranillo biotype, Tinta de Toro.

Their Numanthia 2018 showcases the best of 100 different plots with vines of up to 120 years old. Immensely concentrated, the wine embraces every corner of your palate with rich purple plum, red cherry, cocoa, hawthorn, pine needle and wild herbs. There’s superb length and silky tannins, with fresh acidity and soft grip that balances its innate power.

Food Pairings: Beef tenderloin, tuna tartar, veal stew with mushrooms and truffles, or cheesecake with raspberry coulis.

The Numanthia Termes 2021 comes from the estate’s ‘younger’ vines, averaging 40 years old. It has a vibrant, fruit-forward profile and layers of nuanced spice. The palate is remarkably pure and persistent, with a subtle saline note.

The Eguren brothers are terroir experts and their ‘super-precise viticulture and back-breaking toil is manifested in an exclusive portfolio of just three wines’ (Decanter) – all from the same grape. LVMH purchased the estate in 2008 and have taken further steps in the cellar to enhance their world-class range.

These wines are near the top of their game, and impressed many palates at our Legends of Spain tasting last week. If you haven’t tried them yet, this is your chance.
