‘I love the aromas of bark, mushrooms and wet earth with dark fruit. Turns to ink and black olives. Full-bodied with chewy and intense tannins, yet there’s real polish and length to this. ‘The 2017 Numanthia represents a blend of their terroirs selected from over 100 plots of ungrafted vines, and it fermented with commercial yeasts and matured in 225- and 400-liter French oak barrels, 60% of them new, for 18 months. They lost 30% of the crop to frost, and then it was warm and dry and the grapes ripened thoroughly. They made an effort to remove all the raisins and did a softer vinification to moderate the extraction. It's ripe at 15.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.79 and is quite harmonious, big and rich but with no excess and with integrated oak. 2022 - 2027’ – Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate, 93/100

‘The 2017 Numanthia, sourced from various old vines in Toro, was aged 18 months in French oak (60% new, 1/5 in 400-liter barrels). This garnet-red wine presents balsamic aromas of black olives, graphite and oak, complemented by blackberry and strawberry yogurt hints. Rich and mellow on the palate, it features finely reactive tannins wrapped in a thin, supple texture. ‘Even deeper in colour, inky purple-black in the glass. Yet a subtle nose with blackberry and dark currant notes. Soft, generous palate. Producer information ‘Over the past 20 years, Spain has become the most dynamic wine region in Europe,’ says Wine Spectator, referring to the emergence of modern icons like Numanthia that offer a combination of power and elegance never seen before. While vineyards in the Toro region have been tended since Roman times, Numanthia came into being in 1998, capturing the essence of vineyards up to 150 years old. Numanthia and its baby brother Termes are opposite in style to traditional Rioja such as López de Heredia, for example.

Numanthia is produced from ‘Tinta de Toro’ – a clone of Tempranillo that has adapted to the immensely dry conditions. The sparsely planted old vines produce tiny berries that yield less than 2 tonnes per hectare; offering concentration on another level.
