‘From a warmer, riper vintage than 2017, but this is Niepoort, and so it still has freshness. Deep in colour, this has amazing concentration. Floral, ripe-but-not-overripe nose with fresh fruit aromas. On the palate, great focus with fresh raspberry and cherry fruit, as well as some blackberry. Compact and refined. There’s lovely tannin here and a dry-ish finish, even though it is sweet. Lovely stuff: so refined, with ripeness but also restraint and precision. A Burgundian Port.’ – Jamie Goode, Wineanorak, 98/100
‘This lovely signature Niepoort 2019 vintage Port apparently has higher tannins than the famed 2017, but at this youthful stage, it is hard to comprehend this with its rich, accessible, voluptuous layers of silky, juicy soft black fruits. Benchmark certainly, a notable success – absolutely. The aromatics are so much more important than the palate flavours at this early blending phase (according to Dirk) and this enticing 2019 shows attractive notes of sweet sun ripened black berry fruits, hints of creamy molasses, savoury black stewed winter orchard fruits and a dusty, stony, smoked cigars complexity. Beautifully silky, supple and textured, there is also a fine, stony, grippy mineral tannin mouthfeel that lends a wonderful frame for the juicy blue and black berry fruit finery to be displayed. Fabulously drinkable, deliciously fresh and vibrant, but eminently bold and characterful, this is certainly another very accomplished wine from the House of Niepoort. (Residual Sugar: 88 g/l RS)’ – Greg Sherwood, 97-99/100
'The 2019 Vintage Port is a field blend from old vines (80 to 100 years old) aged for 21 months in large Portuguese oak vats. It comes in with 88 grams per liter of residual sugar and 19.3% alcohol. This was seen about three months after bottling. In its own notes, the winery says it emphasized balance and elegance, and that is certainly a fitting summary of this wine. Let's not forget, though, the appealing aromatics laced with some eucalyptus and the grip on the finish. Plus, the texture is sensual and caressing on the palate. Then, the fruit adds waves of flavor. This finishes with some power and pop, making it a good candidate for the cellar. The tannins are not too hard, though, and they are nicely controlled. Its freshness will also serve it in good stead as it ages. If there's a quibble, it most certainly is not the most concentrated Niepoort ever. Everything else is super, however. This should have good aging potential and the ability to improve more. It's worth noting that on the first day tasted, this was good but not great. A couple of days later, it was far more impressive, still tight, precise and focused. This is not quite on the level of the 2017, which had better fruit in my view, but it is a good example of what the winery can do. There were 39,754 bottles produced, plus some half bottles and larger formats. 2029-2065.' – Mark Squires, Wine Advocate, 96/100
'Brilliant appearance with a dark purple rim and concentrated depth of colour. The aroma is fine and subdued with only a hint of primary dark fruits and some spice. The true potential and style of this wine really comes together on the palate with wonderful integration of dark fruits with a grainy tannic structure, pairing volume with amazing balance and elegance and an impressive finish. In conclusion, the primary fruit on the palate is appealing at this stage, but it’s the balanced tannic structure which indicates great ageing potential for the future.' – Niepoort

Producer information | The Niepoort family has been creating Port Wines since 1842. Dirk Niepoort, fifth generation, is the head of the business after his father, Rolf's retirement in 2005. Dirk is a pioneer of table wines in Portugal and, as with all Dirk's projects around the world, his focus is on traditionally made wines that offer elegance while showcasing terroir. Dirk 'helped transform the region and the way the world thinks about wine' says Wine & Spirits Magazine about Dirk and his role in the Douro. His wines transcend the extreme heat of the Douro and display great freshness and elegance. |
