Niepoort, Batuta 750ml 2014Portugal, Douro
The fruit comes from Quinta do Carril, a north-facing vineyard with more than 70 years, near Quinta de Nápoles and also from two other vineyards that are over 100 years old, planted at an altitude of 750 metres. Batuta is a perfect blend: powerful, elegant, with a superb harmony and a great ageing potential.
Batuta is a wine of extremes, having more of everything, is at the same time, the one with a more discrete behavior. The tannins are present yet fine and elegant, the aroma is very rich, and intense but never exuberant, it has plenty of concentration from the old Douro vineyards, but it’s fresh and elegant. Batuta is a counter-current wine, where less is more.
North facing very old vineyards from Quinta do Carril are the main source for Batuta, but grapes from older vines (about 100 years old) near Quinta de Nápoles are also included. Batuta results from a very delicate vinification, where the alcoholic maceration is led to the extreme and where all the details are taken into account in order to obtain this very complex, fine and elegant wine.
'The 2014 Batuta, Niepoort's well-known field blend from old vines, may actually show as well as the Redoma this year, even though this was the type of wine that I thought might have some obvious problems. The context there is that Niepoort usually makes Batuta in a very understated fashion. Now, take a vintage that tends to produce lighter wines. That might not have a very good result. Yet, this year, in structure it might actually have a bit more pop than the Redoma, although it is still quite understated in concentration (thank the 2014 vintage). The Redoma has slightly more vivid fruit and more flavor, but this does well and has a lively, graceful feel. Perhaps, it just seems more like itself. Let's put it that way.
As always, don't expect to be hit over the head. This is on the lighter side, relying on freshness and elegance rather than size and concentration. In the best years, this has old-school finesse and lingering fruit. In this year, it does reasonably well, even if it is a bit shy here and there. This is a nice and subtle performance for a very difficult vintage. It grows on you as it sits in the glass.' – The Wine Advocate, 90/100
