Tasting notes:
'Family Vineyards is a seamless assemblage of four parcels - Sandford, Mrs M, Windansea and Seadragon - and is the "archetype of our farm", according to Nadia Newton Johnson. Wonderfully sweet and refreshing, it's an acidity-led cuvée in 2019, with remarkable vibrancy and focus, fine-grained tannins and top notes of rose petal and fresh lily. The 20% whole bunches add some tobacco and fresh earth notes. Drink 2022-29.' – Tim Atkin MW, SA Special Report 2020, 96/100

'The farm’s archetype, representing all soils of its sites, imbued with both perfume & structure. 2019 has a more savoury tone, black pepper & smoked meat edging the cranberry & cherry fruit. Harmonious, tannins & oak (33% new) well judged. Layered & tightly packed, like 2018 (4.5 stars, 94 pts) promises longevity, with perhaps a greater sense of quiet strength in waiting.' – Platter's Guide, 5* (95/100)

'The Family Vineyards Pinot Noir from Newton Johnson in Upper Hemel en Aarde sees multiple vineyard parcels combined for maximum complexity. Winemaking for the 2019 involved 20% whole-bunch fermentation before 11 months in barrel, 33% new. The nose is expressive and compelling with notes of musk and rose before cherry and strawberry plus a slight fynbos note while the palate shows pure fruit, racy acidity and fine tannins. It’s as seductive as ever but a little more weight on the mid-palate might elevate it to even greater heights.' – Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

'The Pinot Noir Newton Johnson Family Vineyards is completely destemmed and matured for 11 months in 33% new oak. It has a little more intensity on the nose of wild strawberry, raspberry preserve and subtle sous-bois scents. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip on the entry. Impressive body and depth here, building in the mouth to a very harmonious, lightly spiced finish. There is sophistication threaded through this Pinot from beginning to end. Drink 2022-2030.' – Neal Martin, Vinous, 93/100 (Apr 2021)

Producer information Pinot Noir is infamously picky, but the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley has become one of the finest Pinot producing regions in the New World. While the Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir is consistently one of SA's finest examples. Newton Johnson is a family vineyard led by Dave and Felicity, located in the upper Hemel en Aarde Valley.
