New Rall releases

An exceptional set of wines

Donovan Rall’s 16th vintage release is an accomplished set of wines by a masterful winemaker. Donovan has stepped up his game yet again, and the release as a whole is a triumph!

The Rall White 2023 is well established as an SA benchmark. The addition of a Noa Chenin concrete egg continues in 2023, and this is as smart as ever. ‘A wine of great refinement’, says Christian, it’s a blend of 71% Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho, and 3% Viognier.

The Rall Red 2022 has a Southern Rhône aesthetic and is a blend of 78% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Carignan and 3% Cinsault. It’s a perfect bistro wine, boasting an impressive balance of power and freshness, with only 13% alcohol.

The Grenache Blanc 2023 returns to form in 2023. It’s mostly from old bush-vine fruit in Piekenierskloof, with one 500-litre barrel from a Swartland vineyard on schist providing additional structure. It begins with white flowers, green pineapple notes and crushed stone, ending with a classy and focused finish. Fresh and crisp with 12,5% alcohol.

New Rall releases – An exceptional set of wines

The vineyard for the NOA Chenin Blanc was planted in the 1960s on granite soils. Raised in concrete only, the 2023 has fynbos and buchu notes, with lemon, lime and fresh acidity (12% alcohol). It’s so structured and delicate, demanding time to unfurl.

The AVA Chenin Blanc 2023 is once again the fuller of the two! From schist soils, it has an open nose with perfume, flowers and honey notes; the palate adds a complex array of white peach and green plum (13% alcohol).

The Cinsault 2023 is a blend of 75% Darling and 25% Swartland fruit. It’s a sophisticated offering, showing contained aromatics, savoury earthy notes and very fine tannins. We love this exciting style of Cinsault.

If you’re a Northern Rhône lover, the Rall Syrah 2023 is a must. It’s aromatically beguiling, showing florals, notes of negroni, crushed coriander and biltong spice, along with concentrated fruit and wonderful citric freshness. With a stellar rating from Christian Eedes, it's a 97-pointer for R295!

The AVA Syrah 2022 has incredible depth, purity and quiet power. The wine has a captivating nose and an array of Northern Rhône aromatics, including spice, citrus, and florals, as well as linear, energetic tannins with slate-like grip. This stands out as one of the finest Syrahs from Swartland Schist soils.

The Rall wines have garnered such a following that, due to scarcity and limited availability, their single-vineyards are only available on allocation. Please contact lauren@winecellar.co.za to request an allocation.

TASTING NOTES

Rall Syrah 2023
‘Grapes from a Swartland vineyard on schist and matured in concrete. Entirely irresistible aromatics of dark berries, olive, roast meat, blood orange, earth and fynbos, clove and coriander. Dense fruit, arresting acidity and uncompromisingly grippy tannins. A wine that makes a huge impression without trading off alcohol (this being 12.5%) or sweetness.– get in!’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 97/100

Rall White 2023
‘71% Chenin Blanc, 26% Verdelho and 3% Viognier. Matured for 10 months in a combination of concrete egg, foudre and older barrels. Subtle and alluring aromatics of pear, peach, citrus, fynbos and again a touch of reduction while the palate is relatively lean and tense – very pure and focussed, the finish long and dry. A wine of great refinement. Alc: 13%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Rall Red 2022
‘78% Syrah, 12% Grenache, 7% Carignan and 3% Cinsault – always a later release. A smoky top note before red and black berries, fynbos, cured meat and spice. The palate is relatively broad with lemon-like acidity and powdery tannins, the finish gently savoury. Well balanced and already quite approachable. Alc: 13%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 93/100

Rall Cinsault Blanc 2023
‘Grapes from a tiny block in Wellington. Matured for seven months in older 300-litre barrels. Floral perfume, white peach and citrus on the nose. The palate is tightly wound with a great line of acidity and pithy texture, the finish nicely salty. The most vinosity of any release to date. Alc: 12%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 91/100

Rall Grenache Blanc 2023
‘Including grapes from Swartland property Kloovenburg on schist as well as 15% undergoing skin contact to achieve more texture and interest. A hint of flinty reduction before peach, apricot and pineapple. Rich and concentrated on the palate with tangy acidity and a savoury finish. Great depth of flavour. Alc: 12.5%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Rall Noa Chenin Blanc 2023
‘Grapes from a Paardeberg vineyard on granite. Matured in concrete egg. Compelling and strikingly distinct aromatics of pear, peach and lime plus some flinty reduction while the palate is wonderfully well delineated with zesty acidity and a super-dry finish. Linear, taut and absolutely mouth-watering. Alc: 12%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100

Rall Ava Chenin Blanc 2023
‘Grapes from vineyards on schist. Matured in older barrel. Peach, orange, straw and ginger plus some leesy complexity. The palate is super-rich: dense fruit, coated acidity, the finish savoury and slightly grippy. Layers of flavour.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Rall Cinsault 2023
‘75% of grapes from Darling, 25% from Swartland, the former whole-bunch fermented and the latter destemmed. Matured in foudre. Gorgeous aromatics of raspberry, red cherry, flowers and herbs. The palate is vivid and vital, light-bodied but beautifully structured and wonderfully energetic. Entirely avoids the triviality that this variety can sometimes have. Alc: 12.5%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 95/100

Rall Ava Syrah 2023
‘Again from vineyards on schist. Matured in older 300-litre barrels. Red and black berries, rose, lavender, fynbos, cured meat and white pepper. The palate is super-elegant with pure fruit, fresh acidity and very fine, densely packed tannins. Poised and precise. Alc: 12%.’Christian Eedes, Winemag.co.za, 96/100
