Mount Sutherland, Syrah 750ml 2016South Africa, Sutherland
The high altitude vineyards are truly continental. They’re covered in snow in winter and produce a unique structure that sets this wine apart from our coastal wines. This would not be out of place in a Northern Rhône line-up.
The 2016 Mount Sutherland Syrah holds a towering and impressive structure, with fine acidity and lacy, umami-like tannins. It abounds with complexity – black pepper, black olive, raspberry and even some savoury biltong spice. Starting to live up to all its initial potential, this is now a truly special SA wine.
P.S. We tasted the 2012 today and it is still fresh and vibrant.
‘Stellar 2016 improves on 2015 (4.5 stars, 93 pts) in purity & complexity. Textured, dry yet lithe, signature pepper keeping ripe dark fruit in check. Restrained oak (none new) matched by 18 months bottle ageing. Poised & elegant, with savoury finish.’ – Platter’s Guide 2020, 5* (95/100)
'Lifted floral notes, slate, cold stone and still quite coiled on the first nosing. Quietly unfurls with typical Northern Rhône notes of black pepper, olive, meat spices and a hint of baking spice. The palate immediately strikes with a pointed acidy, vibrant red fruit, crushed florals, tangy pomegranate and a focused, powerful and linear palate with towering, dry and coated tannins. It would not be out of place in a Northern Rhône line-up, yet it’s uniquely South African.' – James Pietersen, 94/100
'Continental style Syrah. Layers of aromas such as rose petals, black cherries, cloves and freshly milled white pepper. Succulence and richness on the palate and ends in a pleasant, long and ripe finish.' – Winemaker
