The high altitude vineyards are truly continental. They’re covered in snow in winter and produce a unique structure that sets this wine apart from our coastal wines. This would not be out of place in a Northern Rhône line-up.
The 2016 Mount Sutherland Syrah holds a towering and impressive structure, with fine acidity and lacy, umami-like tannins. It abounds with complexity – black pepper, black olive, raspberry and even some savoury biltong spice. Starting to live up to all its initial potential, this is now a truly special SA wine.
P.S. We tasted the 2012 today and it is still fresh and vibrant.

'Lifted floral notes, slate, cold stone and still quite coiled on the first nosing. Quietly unfurls with typical Northern Rhône notes of black pepper, olive, meat spices and a hint of baking spice. The palate immediately strikes with a pointed acidy, vibrant red fruit, crushed florals, tangy pomegranate and a focused, powerful and linear palate with towering, dry and coated tannins. Grapes originating from the first vineyards in the newly allocated Sutherland-Karoo region. Highest vineyards in South Africa, planted at 1500m above sea level. Coldest wine growing region in South Africa.. Yielding 3 tons per hectare.
Fruit cold soaked for 10 days at 8º Celsius. Pumped over 3 times daily to maintain a low temperature in the cap. Whole-bunch fermentation at low temperatures. Both free-run and press juice were used. Aged for 14 months in French oak barrels, of which 20% new. South Africa’s first true continental climate wine. All Organic practices.
