Bought from Beaumont, Marelise Niemann’s previous employer, this is the second to last vintage from these vines, as they have now been grubbed up. Firm and chewy it may be, with tannins that are typical of the variety, but this attractive whole bunch spice and sweet bramble fruit. 2019-23'. – Tim Atkin, Special South Africa Report 2017, 92/100

Tasting notes:
Fresh red cherries, purple plums and spicy tea leaves. Vibrant and perfumed palate, with a youthful and well integrated tannin texture.

Winemaker's comments:
'From my early years as winemaker in Bot River, I have had a love affair with an old Tinta Barocca vineyard on the Beaumont’s farm, Compagnesdrift. I dreamt of making a straight Tinta Barocca from this beautiful old vineyard, and after gaining some experience and confidence, working in Douro, Portugal, Momento Tinta Barocca was born - a wine that reflects the spirit of the vine.

My winemaking approach is gentle and ‘hands-off’, respecting the grape and its place, and allowing the wine to express its own character and origin.' – Marelise Niemann

Vineyard blacks:
42-year-old Tinta Barocca, south-facing, origin Bot River.

Bokkeveld shale

This vineyard was hand-picked and hand-sorted, starting in the early hours of the morning. As a result of vineyard age and little rainfall in 2015, the vineyard production was reduces to a tiny 2 tons. Natural and gentle winemaking procedures were followed in the cellar, allowing the vineyard to speak and express itself in the wine. 1/3 whole bunches and gentle punch downs by hand done twice daily. After 5 weeks of maceration on skins, grapes were basket-pressed to barrel. 15 months of oak maturation in old, 225 litre French oak barrels.
