'"Farm your wines, don't make them", is Marelise Niemann's motto and it shows in her superb blend of Chenin Blanc and 34% Verdelho from Bot River, the Paardeberg, Piekenierskloof and the Voor Paardeberg. ‘The 2022 Chenin Blanc Verdelho is a blend of six vineyards aged 11 months in 20% new oak. The complex nose offers yellow fruit, egg whites, stem ginger and a little honeysuckle, with light fennel scents emerging with time. The harmonious palate has impressive weight, lovely balance and complexity with fennel, orange rind, marmalade and lemongrass towards the engaging finish. | Producer information | Marelise Niemann began her Momento brand in 2013. Marelise has a passion for Grenache, which she realised after working with Eben Sadie in Priorat in 2010. Grenache is not a widely planted grape in South Africa, but her passion has led her to find the only Grenache Gris vineyard which is located in Voor-Paardeberg. She is lucky enough to work with vines all over the Western Cape which are unique expressions of their regions and terroir. |
