‘With it’s pronounced salt and pepper flavour profile that is the hallmark of Cape Agulhas Syrah, the nose is led by red cherry and violets, followed by smoked bacon, green olive brine, white pepper and dried buchu. It has a medium bodied palate, with concentrated fruit coating an intensely umami core: soy, brine brightened by orange zest on the finish with fine tannins.’– Winemaker

'A firm favourite at Wine Cellar, this wine is from two sites in Gaansbaai planted in koffieklip and clay. 50% whole bunch, this wine has a Northern Rhône soul to it. Notes of blood orange, cassis, maraschino cherries and meat spice on the nose, the palate is filled with dense, pure dark fruit and finishes with tannins that are equally gravelly and refined. 'Fast becoming one of the most exciting Syrah’s in South Africa, this third release of the Stars in the dark from Agulhas is made from 3 separate parcels off shale, clay and koffieklip soils. There is less whole bunch in 2020, than 2019, with more cool, feminine notes. The 2020 explodes with lots of dark rose and violet, salty geranium and maritime notes plus slow to evolve trademark white pepper spice. Pure fruited with red and black berry on the palate and poised fruit weight. There is wonderful white pepper spice and horizontal saline cut to balance all that cool fruit. This is an accomplished wine of effortless balance.' – James Pietersen (Jun 2021)

'Grown on shallow shale and koffieklip soils, Lambson included 100% stems in the blend, though they are barely noticeable as they are so seamlessly assimilated. The wine is then matured in 300 and 400-litre seasoned French oak barrels. It is blessed with a compelling, quite ethereal bouquet that does not burst from the glass, rather it reels you in with pure scents of blackberry, freshly cracked black pepper, pressed iris petals and a touch of rooibos. The 2019 takes around 30 minutes for the marine element to surface, hints of Japanese seaweed join the chorus line, getting more intense on day two. Frankly, I have encountered few South Africa wines with such delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grain tannins and a silky smooth texture. Utterly seductive from the start, it combines freshness and harmony to world-class degree. That underlying salinity becomes more prominent towards the finish that is a doppelgänger for Côte-Rôtie. Its black pepper theme lingers on the aftertaste. Re-tasting the bottle after 24 hours, there is absolutely no sign of degradation and it simply reconfirms the outstanding calibre of this sensational wine. Producer information At just 21 years old, Sam Lambson's passion for wine has led him to create Minimalist Wines. A label that allows him to bottle the vineyards that speak to him, in a minimal-intervention approach. He is studying a BSc Oenology degree at the University of Stellenbosch and has already worked with some big names in the industry including working harvests under Lukas van Loggerenberg, Chris Alheit and Carl van de Merwe of De Morgenzon. He is captivated by flavours and fragrances and enjoys experimenting with different varietals and techniques.
