Migliarina, Grenache 750ml 2017South Africa, Wellington
'100% Varietal Grenache, single vineyard aged 7 months in shaven oak, untoasted. Inoculated, whole berry, destemmed, cold fermented (max 13 to 20 deg) taking 3 weeks to finish fermentation. Incredibly pretty wine with fragrant raspberry, strawberry, red cherry perfume notes with an almost Cinsault-like Turkish delight, marzipan, parma violets and blood orange lift. Carsten’s mantra is not to 'spoil' the wine with too much savoury sappy spice and oak, hence no whole bunch and the obsessive focus on purity, precision and perfume. The saline, cassis, oyster shell notes are incredible. A profound expression.' – Greg Sherwood MW, 93/100
'Pale ruby. Sweet, fresh, strawberry fruit. Definitely Grenache but with a very light touch. So gluggable... Might be a little light to go with some foods but it would be the perfect red aperitif. Absolutely up my boulevard. Not given away though...' – Jancis Robinson, JancisRobinson.com, 16.5/20
'The 2017 Grenache was fermented on the skins and saw no new oak. The fleshy, ripe bouquet of red cherries and crushed strawberry fruit is a little earthy in style. The palate is well balanced, with fleshy, rounded red berry fruit laced with white pepper and bay leaf, and nicely proportioned toward a smooth finish that slips down the throat with ease. Lovely.' – Neal Martin Report 2018, 92/100
'The colour is a light ruby red. On the nose it is perfumed with sweet raspberry, spice and a touch of black cherry. The palate is soft, yet firm tannins with a velvety mid palate and lasting forest berry finish.' – Carsten Migliarina
Since 2002, Carsten Migliarina has quietly been sticking to his vision of producing food-friendly, refined wines that also offer immense value. His successful Migliarina range and small-batch offerings allow him to express his creativity and produce some truly unique wines. He sources grapes from across the entire Western Cape, and only uses those that represent the most exciting possibilities of South African wine. Carsten never studied winemaking but his journey with wine began at the young age of 14 when he first attempted to ferment table grapes.
