Vinous ‘Wine of the Week’, new brokerage listings, & a Darling 92-pt Cinsault

Dear *|FNAME|*,

This week’s top picks include the sought-after Stars in the Dark from Minimalist Wines, which is fast becoming one of the most exciting Syrahs in South Africa. We’re enjoying the bright and savoury Illimis Cinsault from Darling, while Spain’s Lagar de Cervera Pazo de Seoane Rosal (try saying that fast) is as intense and intriguing as its name. Alsace enthusiasts will be delighted to hear that Trimbach is back in stock, including the ‘perfect pinot gris for Riesling lovers’. Finally, our brokerage list has just been updated and offers a variety of styles and regions across all price tiers.

Minimalist Wines, Stars in the Dark Syrah 2021
R 315 PER BOTTLE

The 2021 Stars in the Dark Syrah is the fourth release from rising star Sam Lambson. The 2019 was one of only two South African wines selected as a Vinous ‘Wine of the Week’, with an impressive rating of 97/100. The 2021 vintage is Northern-Rhône-like in style, with brooding dark fruit, cassis and meaty notes, and a herbaceous, dry finish. We only have a small allocation of this delicious wine, and it has a habit of selling out on release.

Illimis, Cinsault 2021
R 205 per bottle

‘A delicate yet layered wine’, says Christian Eedes, scoring the latest release of Illimis Cinsault 92 points. We loved the 2020 vintage, and the 2021 is a step up! Made from an old vineyard planted in 1974 in Darling, it’s bright and juicy with rich red cherry, crushed roses, and wild strawberry aromas, leading to a spicy, savoury finish with crunchy tannins.

Lagar de Cervera, Pazo de Seoane Rosal 2021
R 295 per bottle

If you’re seeking out a thirst-quenching white wine that’s not shy of intensity, look no further than Lagar de Cervera Pazo de Seoane Rosal 2021. A classic expression of Spain’s Rias Baixas terroir and Atlantic influence, you can expect complex citrus and orchard fruit under white florals and a fresh salinity. With half of the Albariño undergoing malolactic fermentation, this is an intriguing blend of 60% Albariño with Caiño Blanco, Loureiro and Treixadura.
