Plus a ‘benchmark example’ of village Chablis Friday, 31 March 2023

April value case, Luddite, Fronsac royalty, & a ‘super’ Viña Alberdi

This week’s selection has something for everyone – it’s an enticing mix of regions, styles and vintages. La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi Reserva 2018 offers terrific bang for your buck at R340, while VineVenom’s Serenade Cap Classique 2015 will thrill Champagne lovers. The Luditte Saboteur White is succulent and pure, and Bordeaux’s La Dauphine Fronsac 2018 is their highest scoring vintage yet. For a classic village Chablis that’s both rich and refreshing, Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin continue to lead the way. The turn of the month also brings with it our latest Wine Cellar Insiders’ Case, with free delivery anywhere in South Africa.

La Rioja Alta Viña Alberdi Reserva 2018
R 340 PER BOTTLE

Rioja reds continue to hit the lights out for great quality and value. This 100% Tempranillo is Alberdi’s highest-scoring vintage and their only wine from 2018! ‘Which means that all the Tempranillo grapes that were destined for (Gran Reservas) 890, 904 and all the other wines went to this wine. So, this is a super-Viña Alberdi,’ explains the Wine Advocate’s Luis Gutiérrez. 2018 was a cooler vintage, allowing for wines of freshness and juicy acidity, along with incredible depth and fruit intensity because of the special vineyards used for this Reserva. Fill your boots.

VineVenom Serenade Cap Classique 2015
R 460 PER BOTTLE

If you love Champagne, this utterly captivating Cap Classique is for you. Upon revisiting this wine last week, we were impressed by how pure and vibrant it is. In the Top 10 in the Prescient Winemag Report and scoring 93+ from Christian Eedes and Greg Sherwood, it shows complex aromatics of dried ginger, stone fruit, dried thyme, hay and cardamon spice. The palate is layered with citrus, stony minerality, and a long, saline finish. With no follow-up vintage and fewer than 200 bottles left, grab it while you can.

Luddite Saboteur White Crown Cap 2022
R 200 PER BOTTLE

The Luddites have garnered a cult-following for their Saboteur Crown Cap range, and the 2022 White is the perfect accompaniment to your next lunch or dinner. With its fruit purity, salty, mineral core and great texture, this wine is a staple in our households. Think delicate white floral and peach aromatics with nuances of orange rind and excellent mid-palate weight. One bottle won’t be enough!

Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin Chablis 2021
R 595 PER BOTTLE

Jean-Paul & Benoît Droin have been tending vineyards and making wine in Chablis for over 400 years. They’re leaders of classically styled Chardonnay, and their Chablis 2021 is ‘pretty much a benchmark example of what village Chablis should be’, says Decanter. From a classic vintage, the 2021 offers lovely richness and succulent fruit complemented by the region’s hallmark salinity and chalky minerality.

La Dauphine Fronsac 2018
R 495 PER BOTTLE

Fronsac offers some of the best value in all of Bordeaux. The pinnacle of the Right Bank in the 18th century, selling for higher prices than both Pomerol and Saint-Emilion, recent reinvestment has put top Fronsac on par with the finest Right Bank wines in great vintages – but at a fraction of the price. ‘La Dauphine is one of the leading Fronsac estates’, affirms Neal Martin, and it continues to be a Wine Cellar favourite. 2018 is the highest scoring wine from this Fronsac giant. Exceptional at below R500 and drinking beautifully now, it will age for another decade with ease.

Lelie Van Saron Jade Methode Ancestrale 2022 is the latest release from Natasha Williams. Predominately Clairette Blanche, it’s sure to spice up any dinner party. Moving to vintage Bordeaux, the Fonréaud Listrac Medoc 2011 is a ‘forward style' blend, according to James Molesworth.
