Wine Cellar Weekly: New ‘jaw-dropping’ 97+ pt release, one of SA’s finest Chardonnays & vintage reds

Making up our star-studded line-up this week, we have two highly-rated wines from top South African producers. The 97+ point Series M 2018 from Vilafonté, which already has rave reviews, and the excellent Hamilton Russell Vineyards Chardonnay 2020 which stays true to their quintessential style. There are less than 20 bottles of the extremely popular Bosberaad Chenin Blanc left – which has received high praise from Neal Martin – and a sumptuous, Spanish food wine. Vintage reds from one of SA's oldest estates completes this week's offerings.

Vilafonté, Series M 2018
R 880 per bottle

'Another jaw-dropping 2018 Series M,' writes Greg Sherwood MW, has just been released. Scoring 97+/100, Greg continues, saying, 'this very well may be one of the finest young Vilafonté reds I have ever tasted on release.' Limited quantity available.

Hamilton Russell Vineyards produces some of the country’s finest Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs. Numanthia, Termes 2015
R 395 per bottle

Numanthia is one of Spain’s great modern-day wineries. In contrast to traditionalist producers like López de Heredia from Rioja, these wines offer plush fruit and polished oak, while maintaining fresh acidity and purity. The Termes comes from ‘younger’ vines in the Toro region, aged 50 years and older. Possibly the greatest steak wine in our cellar and quite frankly, a bargain at less than R400 per bottle.

Paulus Wine Co., Bosberaad Chenin Blanc 2020
R 300 per bottle

Neal Martin awards very few wines the acclaim of his Cellar Favourite and the 2019 Bosberaad was one of only two SA wines selected. The 2020 vintage exudes greatness, setting the bar high for 2020 Chenin Blanc. It is a true representation of Paul Jordaan's (Sadie Family winemaker) and Pauline’s mastery. Its poised complexity and electrifying acidity bodes well for further ageingVery limited.

Vintage KWV
A classic introduction to vintage South African reds

KWV’s history dates back to 1918 – one of the oldest wine establishments in South Africa’s wine history. Vintages from the late '90s onwards rarely grab the spotlight, but we have an exciting parcel of red wines available from the early '90s, '80s and '70s. These wines offer great value ranging from R 150 – R 800 per bottle for wines with 30 years of maturity! Expect tertiary characteristics and firm acidities which work well with simple, hearty food.
