Wine Cellar Weekly: 97, 96 & 95-pt must-have wines & maiden releases from up-and-coming winemaker

The high scores keep rolling in. The benchmark Eden Cabernet Franc from Raats recently scored 97 points from Greg Sherwood MW. At 96 points, the Morgon Côte du Py from iconic Jean Foillard is arguably one of Beaujolais's best wines. Receiving not one but two 95-point scores (Tim Atkin MW and Platter's), De Morgenzon's Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019 provides pure drinking pleasure. Banele Vakele's maiden-release Tembela wines are sweeping across SA and we've been lucky to secure a batch. We're also offering our selection of the perfect wines to pair with Northeast Asian cuisine – as per our tasting event this week. Lastly, we think all wine-drinkers should know about our curated monthly cases which is why we're giving away one of our yet-to-be-seen July Insiders' cases.

Tembela Wines, Verdelho and Syrah 2020
From R 235 per bottle

After years of gaining experience in SA and abroad, Banele Vakele has started his own wine label, Tembela Wines, which pays tribute to his late mother. Just released, local critic Christian Eedes calls his Syrah 2020 'dramatic stuff!'. It has an enticing nose busting with violets, blueberries, plumbs and peppery notes plus beautiful tannins. As for his Verdelho 2020, its fruity, citrus aromas carry through to the palate and the creamy mouthfeel is excellently balanced by its racy acidity. Both great food wines.

Raats, Eden High Density Single Vineyard Cabernet Franc 2018
R 2,200 per bottle

The super-rare Raats Eden wines are produced from meticulously-planted, 12-year-old vines in Bruwer Raats's backyard. Greg Sherwood MW recently scored it 97 points calling it 'another enchanting, seductive rendition of this iconic single vineyard wine.' He continues, 'this has all the finesse and pedigree you could ever want from a benchmark Cabernet Franc.' We believe the Eden Cab Franc to be SA's finest expression of this variety – can age for another two decades.

De Morgenzon, Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019
R 435 per bottle

De Morgenzon received stellar accolades (double 95 points) for their newest Reserve Chenin Blanc 2019. This ‘rich and exotic’ Chenin is a true representation of winemaker Carl van der Merwe’s skill and precision. Showcasing the true essence of the Old Vine Project, it provides immense drinking pleasure for the price. ‘Thrilling fine acidity & wood woven into intense fruit profile, reflecting both special provenance of the vines & the synergy between Old World elegance & New World opulence.’ – Platter’s Guide

Foillard, Morgon Côte du Py 2018
R 815 per bottle

A 96-pointer from Beaujolais icon, Jean Foillard. One of France’s most revered vignerons, his Morgon Côte du Py is undeniably one of the most famous and sought-after bottlings in the region. The 2018 shows incredible depth and finesse, and it is no surprise that Decanter says it's ‘able to compete with top Premier Cru Côte d’Or wines.' James Suckling agrees, calling it a ‘beauty’ and one of the best he has tasted from Foillard in recent years.

Perfect Pair: Wine Cellar x Allium wines
From R 160 per bottle

In our quest to discover the perfect pair to Allium’s Asian cuisine, the Anselmo Mendes Muros Antigos Loureiro 2019 and Pesquié's Le Paradou Grenache 2018 were clear crowd favourites. They shone with the sweet, sour and umami flavours of the dishes on the night and, for only R175 and R160 a bottle, they are absolute must-haves. The Jacquesson 742 Champagne as the welcome drink was a banger with the KFC (Korean fried chicken) and freshly shucked oysters.
