‘Irresistible’ Cheval des Andes, under-the-radar Damascene, & rosé for days

The office has been abuzz this week with thrilling new releases, but some of the most rewarding wines to drink don’t always get the attention they deserve. Damascene’s Stellenbosch Cabernet Franc 2023 is one such release – it’s light-footed, elegant, and should be on everyone’s shopping list. Another delicious new addition to the cellar is Mahalia Kotjane’s maiden rosé, while Michel Genet Rosé Grand Cru 'Redblend 9208' NV is refined, precise and impossibly moreish. From one of Argentina’s finest estates, Cheval des Andes 2019 is ‘rather irresistible’, says Jancis Robinson, and Alonso & Pedrajo Suañé Blanco Reserva 2018 is a vibrant white Rioja, blending Viura with Sauvignon Blanc.

Damascene W.O. Stellenbosch Cabernet Franc 2023
R 535 per bottle

This wine always flies under the radar in the Damascene release, but it’s consistently the one we end up discussing most in the office. Why? Because it’s just so darn compelling. From Bottelary fruit, there’s great purity and brightness here. Herbaceous top notes lead to a palate with succulent fruit and chalky tannins. If you’re looking for something new to try – this is it!

Three Quarters Lereol Rosé 2024
R 170 PER BOTTLE

From the winemaker of Tim Atkin’s Rosé of the Year three times in a row, we’re so excited to bring you Mahalia’s very own maiden rosé. From Stellenbosch fruit and an amalgamation of her children’s names, the ‘Lereol’ will quickly become your rosé of choice this summer. However, with a mere 800 bottles produced, we doubt it will last till the end of the year. It offers strawberry, orange zest and crunchy raspberry, with texture to boot. The finish is the best part though – it’s dry, saline and will have you coming back for more.

Michel Genet Rosé Grand Cru 'Redblend 9208' NV
R 855 PER BOTTLE

Established by Michel Genet in 1965, this family-run Champagne house in the village of Chouilly oversees 37 parcels spread across 9 hectares, primarily planted with Chardonnay. A Rosé Grand Cru, the 'Redblend 9208' is 92% Chardonnay with 8% Pinot Noir from the only Pinot Noir block on the farm, delivering fine acidity and precision. The wine is a pale salmon hue with orangey tints, offering aromas of violet and peony, fresh redcurrant, cherry, apricot, and a charming citrus finish.

Cheval des Andes Mendoza 2019
R 2,350 per bottle

This 98-point gem from Argentina is a 50/50 blend of Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon. The high-altitude vineyards that produce this wine, from Malbec vines planted in 1929, showcase Argentina's genetic diversity, preserved through massal selection. Expect spices, blue and back fruit, white pepper and violets, with fine-grained tannins and a long finish. As Luis Gutiérrez of the Wine Advocate points out, this vintage is tasty, supple and should develop slowly in the bottle, making it a must-have for collectors.

Alonso & Pedrajo Suañé Blanco Reserva 2018
R 595 PER BOTTLE

This is a captivating blend of Viura and 25% Sauvignon Blanc, sourced from two high-altitude plots in Villalba de Rioja. The older Viura vines impart depth and complexity, while the younger Sauvignon Blanc vines add freshness, resulting in a wine with chiselled acidity, green apple and citrus zest flavours, good extract and chalky minerality (Tim Atkin MW). Alonso and Pedrajo was founded in 2011 by two friends, Javier and Alberto, who’ve gained a reputation for experimental yet elegant wines, blending the best of modern and traditional winemaking. This white fermented on skins for 10 days and shows a great balance of pure fruit and texture. Perfect for spring!
